Educational qualification for M.Sc. Biotechnology

The candidate should have passed a Bachelor Degree under 10 +2 +3 pattern of education in Science in Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Veterinary and Fisheries Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering / Technology, 4 years B.S. ( Physician Assistant Course ) or Medicine ( M.B.B.S. ) or B.D.S. from any Institute /  University recognized by the Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla / University Grant Commission, New Delhi with at least 55% marks for general and other categories and 50% for SC /  ST category candidates.

Educational qualification for M.Sc. Microbiology

The candidate should have passed a Bachelor Degree under 10 +2 +3 pattern of education in Science with any of the subjects i.e. Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Botany or Zoology or M.B.B.S. / B.V.Sc from any Institute / University recognized by the Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla / University Grant Commission, New Delhi with at least 50% marks for general and other category and 45% for SC / ST category candidates.

Age / Date of birth

Male candidates should not be more than 26 years; female candidates should not be more than 28 years and SC / ST candidates not more than 29 years in age as on 1st July of the year 2018. The date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board / University certificate only will be considered as authentic.

Out of the total seats, 15% of the seats shall be reserved for Schedule Castes and 7.5% Schedule Tribes. These candidates must however, qualify the Entrance Examination. Further, the SC and ST candidates will be required to produce, in original, a certificate issued by a competent authority at the time of counseling, failing which they will not be considered for the admission. In case sufficient number of the candidates in either of categories i.e. SC & ST are not available, the seats will be filled from unreserved categories.

HPU Exam Pattern 2019

M.Sc. Biotechnology
The question paper for M.Sc. Biotechnology Entrance Examination 2018 will be of 100 marks. The paper shall contain a total of 100 multiple – choice questions of one mark each. The Examiner will set 20 questions from each of the following sections and the candidate shall attempt all these questions by putting an appropriate choice on the OMR answer script / sheet. There shall be no negative marking in the entrance examination. The duration of entrance Test shall be 1 hour and 30 minutes.
M.Sc. Microbiology
The Entrance Examination for M.Sc. Microbiology 2018-2019 will consists of one question paper and will be of 100 maximum marks. The paper shall contain a total of 100 multiple-choice questions of one mark each. There shall be no negative marking in the entrance examination and the medium of examination shall be English. The duration of entrance Test shall be one and half hour.
The pattern of question paper ( s ) will be multiple – choice questions ( MCQ ). Some of the sample questions are attached at the end of the prospectus to give a feel of pattern of questions in the Entrance Examination Test.

M.Sc. Biotechnology

Cell Biology & Microbiology :

Structure and function of cell organelles, ultra structure of cell membrane, cytosol, Golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum ( rough and smooth ), ribosomes, cytoskeletal structures ( actin, microtubules etc. ) Mitochondria, chloroplasts, lysosomes, peroxysomes, nucleus ( nuclear membrane, nucleoplasm, nucleolus chromatin ); Cell division and cell cycle : mitosis, meiosis, stages of cell cycle and binary fission. History of microbiology, general account of bacteria, mycoplasma and viruses; ultra – structure of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells; microbial nutrition and nutrient uptake; asexual reproduction in bacteria; applications of microbes in agriculture, food and fermentation, medicine and environment.

Basic Biochemistry & Instrumental Techniques :

Industrial & Bioprocess Technology :

Cultivation of microbes, bioreactors and their types, downstream processing, fermentation processes; environmental pollutants, their types and impact on the human health, biodegradation & bioremediation, biomining& bioleaching; kinetics of enzyme reactions, Km and Vmax determination, types of enzyme inhibitions, immobilization of whole cells / enzymes; patenting of biotechnological inventions; management of bio-business.

Fundamentals of Genetics & Molecular Biology :

Mendel’s laws of inheritance, linkage, alleles, sex linked inheritance, cytoplasmic inheritance, crossing over, chromatin structure and organization; DNA structure, replication, transcription, translation, reverse transcription, genetic code, regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes; mitochondrial and plastid DNA; plasmids; spontaneous and induced mutations, transposable genetic elements and genetic recombination: transformation, conjugation and transduction.

Plant & Animal Tissue Culture Techniques :

Totipotency in plants, somatic embryogenesis, micropropagation and somaclonal variation; Protoplast culture and somatic cell hybridization, Induction of haploids and polyploidy through tissue culture, embryo rescue, embryo culture, production of secondary metabolites by plant tissue culture. Primary animal cells culture, anchorage and non – anchorage dependent cells; secondary cultures, transformed animal cells, established / continuous cell lines; measurement of growth and viability of cells in culture, tissue culture media and their components; growth kinetics of cells in culture, differentiation of cells, organ culture, production of monoclonal antibodies; transgenic animals; in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer.

M.Sc. Microbiology

The syllabus for the question paper of the Entrance Examination for M.Sc. Microbiology 2018 – 2019 shall be multidisciplinary covering various subjects related to Microbiology that shall cover various subjects taught in three years degree course ( B.Sc. ) with core subjects like Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Immunology, Mycology, Phycology, Biochemical & Biophysical Techniques etc as per subjects / disciplines / specializations given under educational qualifications. The broader guidelines of the syllabus for Entrance Examination shall be as under;

General Microbiology :  History of microbiology, general account of bacteria, mycoplasma and viruses; ultra – structure of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells; microbial nutrition and nutrient uptake; asexual reproduction in bacteria; applications of microbes in agriculture, food and fermentation, medicine and environment.

Basics of Biochemistry and Cell Biology :

Elementary idea of centrifugation, spectroscopy, electrophoresis and chromatography; chemistry of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids; classifications of enzymes, enzyme action and coenzymes; high energy compounds;  glycolysis, hexose mono – phosphate pathway, Kreb’s cycle, glycogenesis, gluconeogenesis, photosynthesis and respiration; beta oxidation, deamination, transamination and urea cycle; structure and functions of cell membrane, mitochondria, chloroplast, golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes and nucleus; cell division.

Basics of Parasitology and Immunology :

Host-parasite interactions, study of diagnostic characteristics and diseases caused by leishmania, plasmodium, entamoebea, giardia, and trypanosoma; morphology and diseases caused by helminths, nematodes, trematodes and cestodes. Types of immunity, innate, acquired active and passive, antigen and antibody reactions, elements of immune system, humoral and cell mediated immunity; and general concept ( s ) of vaccines.

Basics of Mycology and Phycology :

General characters, classification and economic importance; important features and life history of Cyanophyceae ( Spirullina, Oscilatoria, Anabaena ), Chlorophyceae ( Volvox, Oedogonium ), Bacilariophyceae ( Diatoms ), Xanthophyceae ( Voucheria ), Pheophyceae ( Actocarpus ), Rhodophyceae ( Polysyphonia ). General characters, classification and economic importance, important features and life history of Mastigomycotina ( Albugo, Phytopthora ), Zygomycotina ( Rhizopus ), Ascomycotina ( Sacchromyces and Neurospora ), Basidiomycotina ( Puccinia and Agaricus ) and Deuteromycotina ( Cercospora and Coletotrichum ).

M.Sc. ( Botany / Zoology / Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics )

  • A Bachelor’s degree of a University established by law in India ( with the subject of study for M.A. / M.Sc. as one of the subjects ) with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree
  • A Bachelor’s degree with II Division or with at least 45% marks ( 40% in case of SC / ST candidates ) In aggregate in the subject concerned in three years of degree or Honours in the subject concerned. In case of Physics the candidate must have passed B.Sc / B.A. with Mathematics as an elective subject.

( M.Sc. Geography )

  • A Bachelor’s degree of a University established by law in India ( with Geography as one of the subjects ) with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree
  • A Bachelor’s degree with II Division or with at least 45% marks ( 40% in case of SC / ST candidates ) In aggregate in the subject concerned in three years of degree or Honours in the subject concerned.
  • Degree of a foreign University which may be recognised as equivalent for the purpose by the Vice – Chancellor with such conditions as he may impose regarding the additional courses of study which the candidate would be required to pass to qualify for the degree.

Master of Education Course

  • Candidates seeking admission to the M.Ed. programme should have obtained at least 50 percent marks or an equivalent grade in the following programmes:
    • B.Ed.
    • B.A.B.Ed., B.Sc.B.Ed.
    • B.El.Ed.
    • D.El.Ed. with an undergraduate degree ( with 50% marks in each )
  • Reservation and relaxation for SC / ST / PwD and other applicable categories shall be as per rules of the Central Government / State Government whichever is applicable.

Note

No relaxation, even 0.01 percent in the above prescribed percentage of marks shall be granted under any circumstances. ( Para 3.2 of Appendix IV of NCTE Notification No. F-51F1/2007-NCTE ( N&S ) dated 27th November, 2007 ).

M.A. English

  • The admission will be made strictly on the basis of marks obtained in Entrance Test. The test will be open to all with any graduate degree such as B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. / B.Sc. ( Agri. ) / B.Sc. ( Home Science ) / B.Sc. Engg. / MBBS. / BAMS / GAMS / B.Pharma / B.T. or B.Ed. / B.Lib.Sc. / B.L. / B.V.Sc. / B.E. / B.Tech. / Vashishta Shastri / BBA /BCA of University established by law in India with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree A Bachelor’s degree with at least Second division in aggregate or 45% marks in the subject or Honours in the subject of study for M.A. For SC / ST. candidates the eligibility will be 45% in aggregate or 40% marks in the subject or Honours in the subject of study for M.A.

M.A. in Social work

  • A Bachelor’s degree in any stream ( Arts, Science and Commerce ) from a University established by law in India with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree
  • A Bachelor’s degree with at least 50 percent marks in case of General Candidates and 45%in case of Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribes candidates. The reservation and weight – age will be given as per the rules and regulations of the University notified from time to time. The candidates will however be required to produce the proof of their having passed the Bachelor Degree examination with the required credits / percentage of marks positively on the date of counselling as fixed for the candidates by the University / Departments, failing which their candidature will stand cancelled.

M.P.Ed. ( Master in Physical Education )

  • Candidates who have obtained with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree
  • At least 55% ( fifty five percent ) marks ( 50% in case of SC / ST ) in the B.P.Ed. degree or B.Sc. degree in Physical Education, Health Education and sports / are eligible for admission.

MA Physical Education

  • A person who possesses any of the following qualifications shall be eligible to join M.A. Part – I of the course.
  • A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with an aggregate of 106 credits.
  • A Degree of Bachelor of Physical Education of any other University recognized by the H.P. University with atleast 50% marks ( 45% in case of SC / ST ) in aggregate.
  • Post – Graduate Diploma in Physical Education / Degree of Physical Education of another University recognized by the H.P. University with atleast 50% marks ( 45% in case of SC / ST ) in aggregate.
  • B.A. with Physical Education as one of the subjects in three year Degree Course with atleast 45% marks ( 40% in case of SC / ST ) in aggregate. Bachelor of Physical Education with atleast 50% marks ( 45% in case of SC / ST ) in aggregate.
  • B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. degree of any University recognised by Himachal Pradesh University, with 45% ( 40% marks in case of SC / ST ) in aggregate. If he / she is an outstanding sportsman / sportswoman having participated in Inter-University or National Championship in various games recognised by H.P. University Sports and Co-curricular Activities Council.

M.A. Business Economics

  • The test will be open to any graduate degree such as B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com./B.Sc. ( Agri. ) / B.Sc. ( Home Science ) / B.Sc. ( Engg. ) / MBBS / BAMS / GAMS / B.Pharma. / B.T. / or B.Ed. / B.Lib. / B.L / B.V.Sc. / B.E. / B.Tech. / Vashishta Shastri / BBA / BCA of University established by law in India with with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree OR at least 50% marks in aggregate ( 45% marks in case of SC / ST )

Master of Mass Communication

  • Provided the candidate fulfils age and other norms laid down by the University, and is a Graduate with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree
  • A minimum of 50% marks ( 45% in a case of SC / ST ) in aggregate in a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from a University established by law in India shall be eligible to apply for the Entrance Test.

LL.B

  • Bachelors Degree of any faculty of University established by law in India with minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree OR at least 45% marks ( 40% in case of SC / ST candidates )

Post graduate diploma in Mass Communication

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree OR with atleast 50% marks in aggregate ( 45% in case of SC / ST ) from a University established by law in India.

Master of Arts ( Hindi, Translation, Sanskrit, Performing Arts, Economics, Sociology, Public Administration, Political Science, Psychology, History, Yoga Studies, Rural Development )

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree OR with atleast 50% marks in aggregate ( 45% in case of SC / ST ) from a University established by law in India.

Master of Commerce ( M.Com. )

  • With a minimum of 48 credits in Major subject, 48 credits in two minor subjects, 9 credits in compulsory, 1 credit in GI & hobby with aggregate of 106 credits for the award of pass degree.
  • B.Com / B.Com ( Hons ) or Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or B.A. with Commerce or M.A. / M.Sc. in Economics / Statistics / Mathematics.
  • B.A. / B.Sc. degree with Economics / Statistics / Mathematics

    • Photograph must be taken directly facing the camera.
    • Photograph should have no shadows and red eyes.
    • Maximum size 100 KB.

    • File name should not exceed a maximum of 10 characters.
  • Scanned copy of applicant’s signature with following specifications.
    • Applicant should sign in black ink on a white paper and get the signatures scanned.
    • The signature must be signed only by the applicant and not by any other person.
    • Maximum size 100 KB.
    • Scanned signature format should be jpg or jpeg only.
    • File name should not exceed a maximum of 10 characters.

  • Create an email account if candidate already don’t have one.
  • Candidate must give a mobile number in basic details. If candidate don’t have a mobile number, candidates are requested to enter guardian’s mobile number.
  • All mandatory fields are marked with red star.

Application fee

  • Admission fee for all courses except MMC. / PG.DMC. / LL.B. is [rupee] 150/-.
  • Admission fee for MMC. / PG.DMC. / LL.B. / MBE [rupee] 100/-.
  • If Candidate select payment through challan option, Candidate have to select the bank and click on generate challan’. After that Candidate have to download the Challan and submit the same to the selected bank. The Bank will give a reference
    number against the challan.
  • Login again and submit Candidate’s reference number under submit reference number and application form tab.
  • Online Payment mode is following
    • If you select online payment mode, click on make payment
    • On the next page select your payment gateway
    • Click on continue for payment
    • Choose among the given options ( debit card, credit card, net banking etc. )
    • If the payment is successfully done, you will receive a success message with all the details
    • Click on the Submit button to get the form finally submitted.
