Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati invites admission application for Doctor of Philosophy ( PhD ) program 2013 – 2014.
Departments / Centres Offered in PhD :

Categories of PhD Students :
- Regular : A student in this category works full-time for his / her PhD degree. He / she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR / UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
- Sponsored ( Full – Time ) : A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He / She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
- Self – Financed ( Full – TIme ) : A student in this category works full-time towards the PhD Program. He / She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field, with supporting document (s) of proof. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student.
- Project Staff : This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhD Program to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his / her PhD Program, his / her category will be converted to that of Self – Financed unless he / she is granted an assistantship / fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.
- Part – TIme : A student in this category is a professionally employed person ( including the staff of IIT Guwahati ), who pursues the PhD Program while continuing the duties of his / her service. He / She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution / Organisation in which he / she is employed ( Form III ) must be enclosed at the time of application.
- External : This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization / academic institution / industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member ( Institute Supervisor ) of the Department / Centre in which he / she is registered. He / She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution / Organisation in which he / she is employed ( Form IV ) must be enclosed at the time of application.

1. | PhD in Engineering | For admission to the PhD Program in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria : i) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Medical Sciences / Veterinary Sciences / Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index ( CPI ) of 6.5 or 60% of marks. ii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks. iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. iv) A candidate having a Two-year Master's degree ( after completion of 4-year Bachelor's degree) or three-year Master's degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor's degree) in Engineering / Technology / Science in a relevant area with minimum Cumulative Performance Index ( CPI ) of 6.5 or 60% of marks, ( OR ) A candidate with a Two-year MSc degree (after completion of 3-year Bachelor's degree) in a relevant area with minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks, is also considered for admission in the Department of Biotechnology. v) A candidate having a Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks, is also considered for admission in the Department of Biotechnology. vi) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI ( OR ) 70% marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels. vii) A candidate having a Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent in a relevant area, with a Postgraduate Degree in Management Science ( Finance ) or MBA with Finance specialization or equivalent, is also considered for admission in the area of specialization `Construction Management’, of the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in Bachelor's level and 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in the postgraduate degree. viii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD program of the Department in the beginning of his / her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree. ix) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree. |
2. | PhD in Design | For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria : i) Candidates having MArch/MDes degree or MTech / ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. ii) Master’s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics / Fine Arts / Psychology / Physiology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks. iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Design or Engineering / Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks. iv) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions [ Details of the Institutions can be seen from http://mhrd.gov.in/funded_technical_inst_hindi ] v) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design ( NID / CEPT or equivalent ) with first class at Bachelor’s level. vi) BFA ( 4-year professional program, after 10 + 2 ) / GD Art ( 5-year program after 10th standard ) with one year. professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks. vii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD program of the Department in the beginning of his / her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree. viii) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her BDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD program of the Department in the beginning of his / her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BDes and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree. |
3. | PhD in Science | For admission to the PhD Program in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria : i) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. ii) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Science from an Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT ) / Indian Institute of Science ( IISc ) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0. iv) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering / Technology / Design / Science ( from other than IITs / IISc ) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks. |
4. | PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences | For admission to the PhD Program in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences ( HSS ), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria : i) Master’s degree in Arts / Commerce / Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent. ii) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks. iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT ) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0. iv) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design or equivalent (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks. |
5. | PhD in Centres | i) Master’s Degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Architecture / Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. ii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks. iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions [ Details of the Institutions can be seen from http://mhrd.gov.in/funded_technical_inst_hindi. iv) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks. v) Master’s degree in Social Sciences, in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks, is also considered for admission to the Centre for the Environment. |

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati invites admission application for Full-time Dual ( MTech + PhD ) Degree program of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering 2013 – 2014.
IIT Guwahati Admission Eligibility 2013 :
- B.E / B.Tech in any discipline other than CSE or IT or equivalent, with any one of the following criteria ( Please note that this program is not meant for engineering graduates in computer or information technology related disciplines ) :
a.) a CPI of 7.5 or marks of 70% and a valid GATE score in any subject, if the qualifying BE / B Tech degree is not from an IIT.
b.) a CPI of 8.0 only, if the qualifying B Tech degree is from an IIT.
c.) a CPI of 7.0 ( or more ) but less than 8.0, and a valid GATE score in any subject, if the qualifying B Tech degree is from an IIT.

Categories of MTech / MDes Students :
The Institute admits MTech / MDes students under the following categories :
- Regular ( Full – Time ) : These are students who work full-time for their MTech / MDes degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognised funding agency.
- Sponsored ( Full – Time ) : A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organisation or industry for doing MTech / MDes in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his / her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He / She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter ( Form I ) must be attached with the application.
- Part – TIme : This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel ( including the staff of IIT Guwahati ), who can attend classes at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute. The applicant must be a regular employee of a recognized organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute to such students. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution / Organisation in which he / she is employed ( Form II ) must be enclosed at the time of application.
- Project Staff : This category refers to candidates who are presently working on sponsored projects in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. This category of students may be registered on a full-time or part-time basis. No Objection Certificate ( Form III ) must be attached with the application.

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati invites admission application for M.A. Program in Development Studies 2013 – 2014.
The Institute admits MA students under the following categories :
- Rugular ( Full – Time ) - The students will work full-time for their M.A. degree.
- Sponsored ( Full – Time ) - A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organization, NGO, development agency or industry for doing MA in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his / her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. IIT Guwahati Admission Eligibility 2013 :
- A Bachelor’s ( 10 + 2 + 3 ) degree ( Major / Honours ) or equivalent from a recognized University, in any discipline, with a minimum of 50% marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale ( 45% marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale for SC / ST / PD candidates ) in major / honours only. ( OR )
- Candidates not having Major / Honours courses, must have the concerned degree with a minimum 50% aggregate marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale for General / OBC category candidates and a minimum 45% aggregate marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale for SC / ST / PD category candidates.

- Applicants satisfying the eligibility requirement will be assessed for selection through a Written Test.
