IIT Guwahati MS PhD Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in any area or equivalent with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
  • A valid GATE score in any subject.
  • If the qualifying BE / BTech degree is from IIT or a Centrally Funded Technical Institute ( CFTI ), the valid GATE score is exempted provided the minimum CPI is 8.0 or 75% of marks.

Additional Conditions

Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 15-07-2016. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 22-08-2016. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks / CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for the concerned programme. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.

Relaxation for SC / ST / PwD Candidates : Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC / ST / PwD applicants.

Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC ( Non-creamy layer ) and PwD categories. OBC ( Non-creamy layer ) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below. The OBC ( NCL ) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or after 01-04-2015, shall only be acceptable.

The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test and / or interview, if required, based on performance in GATE, grades / marks in the qualifying examination, etc.

Note : Candidates are now not required to send hard copies of any application related documents, including the downloaded online application form or any demand draft, to the institute.

Demand Draft : Demand Draft is NOT REQUIRED now. It will be required for a candidate only and only if he/she is called to appear in Written Test and/or Interview.

In other words, if a candidate is shortlisted and called** to appear in Written Test and/or Interview, only then he / she will be required to arrange a Demand Draft for Rupee 150/- ( Rupee 75/- for SC / ST / PwD candidates ), from any nationalized bank, in favour of INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, payable at Guwahati.

Categories of PhD Students :

  • Regular : A student in this category works full-time for his / her PhD degree. He / she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR / UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
  • Sponsored ( Full – Time ) : A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He / She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
  • Self – Financed ( Full – Time ) : A student in this category works full-time towards the PhD Program. He / She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field, with supporting document (s) of proof. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student.
  • Project Staff : This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhD Program to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his / her PhD Program, his / her category will be converted to that of Self – Financed unless he / she is granted an assistantship / fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.
  • Part – TIme : A student in this category is a professionally employed person ( including the staff of IIT Guwahati ), who pursues the PhD Program while continuing the duties of his / her service. He / She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution / Organisation in which he / she is employed ( Form III ) must be enclosed at the time of application.
  • External : This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization / academic institution / industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member ( Institute Supervisor ) of the Department / Centre in which he / she is registered. He / She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship / fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution / Organisation in which he / she is employed ( Form IV ) must be enclosed at the time of application.

IIT Guwahati PhD Admission Eligibility 2016 :

Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, have been indicated below:

(b) Minimum experience required for Sponsored ( Full-time ), Self-Financed, Part-Time, and External categories of candidates, have also been indicated below.

PhD in Engineering

For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria :

i) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Medical Sciences / Veterinary Sciences / Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index ( CPI ) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology/ Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iii) Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions . Details of the Institutions can be seen from http://mhrd.gov.in/technical-education-1

iv) A candidate having a Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area, with a Postgraduate Degree in Management Science(Finance) or MBA with Finance specialization or equivalent, is also considered for admission in the area of specialization `Construction Management’, of the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in Bachelor’s level and 6.5 CPI or 60% marks in the postgraduate degree.

v) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels.

vi) A candidate having a Two-year Master’s degree ( after completion of 4-year Bachelor’s degree ) or three-year Master’s degree ( after completion of 3-year Bachelor’s degree ) in Engineering/ Technology/Science in a relevant area with minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks, Or
A candidate with a Two-year MSc degree ( after completion of 3-year Bachelor’s degree ) in a relevant area with minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks, is also considered for admission in the Department of Biotechnology.

vii) Postgraduates in Computer Science ( ALCCS ) from Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers ( IETE ), with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index ( CPI ) of 6.5 or 60% of marks, are also eligible to apply for admission in to PhD programme in Computer Science and Engineering.

viii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

ix) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.

PhD in Design

For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria :

i)   Candidates having MArch / MDes degree or MTech / ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Master’s degree in Applied Arts / Ergonomics / Fine Arts / Psychology / Physiology/ Occupational Safety and Health / Journalism / Mass Media Communication with a minimum CPI of 6.0 or 55% marks.

iii) Master’s degree in Management ( MBA or equivalent ) with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks with relevant studies in Design field, and Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.

iv)  Four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Design or Engineering / Technology or Five-year BArch degree  or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

v)    Four-year Undergraduate Diploma in Design ( NID / CEPT or equivalent ), with postgraduate qualification in relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

vi)    Four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Design or Engineering / Technology or Five-year BArch degree  or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. vii)   A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design ( NID / CEPT or equivalent ) with first class at Bachelor’s level.

viii)  BFA ( 4-year professional programme, after 10+2 ) / GD Art ( 5-year programme after 10th standard ) with one year professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

ix)  A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

x)  A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her BDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BDes and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.

PhD in Science

For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i)   Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii)   Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

iii)   Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Science  from an Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT ) / Indian Institute of Science ( IISc ) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv)   Four-year Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering / Technology / Design / Science ( from other than IITs / IISc ) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of  marks.

PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences

For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences ( HSS ), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria :

i)   Master’s degree in Arts / Commerce / Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.

ii)  Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology/ Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

iii)   Four-year Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT ) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv)    Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design or equivalent ( from other than IITs ) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks.

Minimum experience for sponsored, part-time and external categories of applicants for phd programme

Candidate in Sponsored, Part-time and External categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring  organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
