Eligibility for Advertising Courses
Eligibility for most of the advertising postgraduate diploma / degree courses is graduation in any discipline with a minimum of 45 percent marks. Admission to most of these courses is based on an entrance exam and/or interview. Some colleges also offer BA courses in advertising.
There are many private institutes that offer courses in various fields of advertising. While preparing for entering the course, one should keenly observe the advertisements appearing in the mass media especially the fast changing scenario of advertising market. The who’s who of the advertising world, the economics of the advertising industry, famous companies in the field of advertising and other related aspects should be kept in mind. It may be noted that no text book or guide book would be able to provide you a comprehensive material for preparation of entrance examination. The text books and guide books may give you some insight but the real preparation would be your own perception of advertising world.
It should be understood that examiner does not expect from you to know all the technicalities of advertising profession as this would be taught when you would be admitted to course. The entrance exam is to judge your orientation, inclination as well as interest in the subject. So, keep watching advertisements, listen to radio and observe closely the advertisements appearing in the print media. See if you can write a better copy of the advertisement than what you have recently watched or listened to. See if you can make a person daydreaming !
Apart from these, reading business newspapers and magazines related to the subject, would help you understand this dreamland and also to get through the entrance exam. (the writer is Correspondent, All India Radio, Gorakhpur)
