Career in Arabic and Urdu
As the world shrinks and “global” becomes the buzzword, learning a foreign Language other than French, Japanese or German might be a good idea.
The University of Madras offers a Master’s program in Arabic Literature and culture and a Masters in Urdu for starters.
The University that is completing 150 years in the field of education kick started its Arabic, Persian and Urdu department way back in 1930.
It is presently under the School of Sanskrit and other Indian Languages inside the Marina Campus of the University of Madras and the department offers Masters, M Phil, PhD and also certificate courses in Arabic and Urdu Languages.
Prospective candidates who prefer to pursue the MA need to have a recognized BA or B.Sc degree with Arabic or Urdu as a subject of study or they must have studied Afzal – Ul – Ulma (an Oriental title in Arabic) or the Adib – Fazil (Oriental title in Urdu) as a requirement.
Nizar Ahmed, Head of Department, Department of Arabic, Persian and Urdu who is also an Arabic scholar is in charge of the Arabic classes at the University of Madras.
Nizar has written 20 books on different aspects of the Arabic Language. Queried on whether the Arabic Language posed a challenge to Indian students he replied, “It is not as difficult as one thinks and it is not as easy either.
A student can write and talk basic Arabic after seriously taking some 50 to 60 classes in our certificate courses”.
Students learn Arabic grammar, modern prose and literature, Arabic linguistics, Arabic journalism in India, classical prose and poetry, translation skills, Indo – Arabic relations and essay writing in the MA course.
The two – year Masters program seem to provide bright employment prospects for students.
Nizar Ahmed says, “Students who complete their masters can become teachers, lecturers, translators, not just in India but also in Arab and other foreign countries.
Students can even land jobs at Indian government agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation, embassies and consulates, banks and even airports as translators of tutors”.
A master in Urdu leads you to teach in universities, take up jobs in the Urdu media and as translators.
