Career Opportunities in Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering is a diverse field of engineering that integrates science, medicine and mathematics to solve biological and medical problems thereby making the world a healthier place to live.
The challenges created by the diversity and complexity of living systems require creative, knowledgeable and imaginative people working in teams of physicians, scientists, engineers and even business folk to monitor, restore and enhance normal body function.
Biomedical Engineers require a solid foundation in a more traditional engineering discipline such as electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering.
Most undergraduate biomedical engineering programs require students to take a core curriculum of traditional engineering courses.
However, biomedical engineers will be expected to integrate their engineering skills with their understanding of the complexity of biological systems in order to improve medical practice. Thus biomedical engineers must be trained in the life sciences as well.
Undergraduate Courses and Doctorate Degree in Biomedical Engineering
A well – rounded course of study in high school is essential to pursue B.Tech to prepare best for a college program in Biomedical Engineering. The minimum such study should include a year each of biology, chemistry and physics.
In addition to high school algebra, geometry, advanced algebra; trigonometry, pre – calculus, a computer programming gives the students a definite advantage in their program.
As biomedical engineers work to improve health care worldwide, the ability to communicate in another language is a valuable skill. The syllabus for UG. programs varies from university to university.
Most programs require courses in biology, physiology, biochemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry, general physics, electronics, circuits and instrumentation design, statics and dynamics, signals and systems, biomaterials, thermodynamics and transport phenomenon and engineering design.
Many engineering and science courses incorporate laboratory experience to provide students with hands – on real world applications. Following this, the biomedical engineer may assume an entry level engineering position in hospital, or even a sales position for a biomaterials or biotechnology company.
Many biomedical engineers would seek a graduate level training in biomedical engineering or in a related engineering field. A Masters or Doctoral degree offers the biomedical engineer greater opportunities in research and development, whether such work is in an industry, academic or government setting.

According to the Indian Bureau of Labour Statistics, Biomedical Engineers have excellent job prospects and earning potential in the years to come. Most of the biomedical engineers are employed in medical equipment and supplies manufacturing.
Other large employing groups include pharmaceutical and medical manufacturing, scientific and research development services and general medical and surgical hospitals.
The demand for increasingly, sophisticated medical device is behind the predicted employment increase. The kinds of institutions that employ biomedical engineers include medical research institutions, hospitals, industrial firms and teaching institutions.
Biomedical engineers often use their background in engineering and medicine to perform a coordinating role.
They find employment in companies that manufacture equipments used, in hospitals and diagnostic centers or centers for research and development, manufacturing, quality control and testing and also installation, maintenance or sales and marketing departments.
They can also be employed in corporate hospitals for selecting, handling, maintaining sophisticated equipment in addition to building customized devices for special needs or work in institutions involved in research.
There are a few government agencies where they can get recruited for product testing, safety and establishing safety standards for devices.
Biomedical Engineers become faculty in Universities, Colleges etc. For college teaching, a masteifs degree is more preferable whereas a doctorate opens more doors.
Teaching and research at the university level and high level employment with good promotion prospects in non – academic research institutes, private industry and government agencies usually require a Ph.D.
There is a huge demand for biomedical engineers abroad. Clinical engineers who monitor and maintain the data bases of instrumentation and work with physicians to adapt instrumentation for the specific needs of the physicians and hospitals are most sought after in hospitals abroad.
Rehabilitation Engineers who develop hardware and software computer adaptations provide cognitive aids to assist patients with memory impairment are also much sought after.
Golden opportunities also await orthopedic engineers who improve the quality of life of patients by developing prosthetics, artificial limbs, hips and other organs.
In addition to Post Graduate and Ph.D candidates can go abroad to pursue Ph.D and Post Doctoral fellowship (PDF) in foreign universities and R&D centres respectively, which is highly paid and respected profession in Western world.

Anyone researching in the area of biomedical sciences has two advantages : the research will benefit patients and it can lead to solving of major theoretical problems.
Now the engineers are equal partners sitting at the same high table as doctors. Other positions include Senior Research Fellow (SRF), Research Assistant (RA), and Research Associate (RA) in various government and private research institutions after completion of B.Tech / B.E / M.Tech / M.E / Ph.D.
The reason for this is the immense benefits of medical imaging or equipments invented by physicists and engineers who have contributed to medical treatment and diagnosis.
