Career in Architecture
The Construction Industry in any economy is the mirror of its growth and prosperity. In the last few decades there has been boom in this industry.
From a village hut to sky scrappers, from work shed to massive industrial complexes, from small roads to national highways, every big and small human pursuit entails building and construction.
It is a multifarious industry employing a variety of talents, experts and technologists. The construction industry covers two broad functions – one the technical one in which a design is evolved and the other which gives shape to the design.
With the proliferation of urban settlements and conglomerations, the field of Architecture has become an important and much sought after profession. The profession is a mix of artistic creativity and engineering skills.
Architecture deals with design, plan of buildings and structure. This vast field comprises creative, technical and craft aspects. The architect is responsible for the planning, designing and supervising of construction works.
An Architect has to keep in view consideration of stability, utility and beauty while planning and designing all civil works. A client’s requirement of appropriate, safe and economical shelter are satisfied through efficient planning, and by devising pleasant interior spaces and a beautiful exterior.
The building is planned in such a way as to impart to its beauty, grandeur and interest. An Architect would design the work by visiting the site to survey the area on which the structure is to be built. He consults clients, plans layout of structures and prepares sketches of proposed buildings.
The final design shows the exact dimensions of every position of the building including the location of electrical outlets, plumbing and air – conditioning, etc.
An architect should be aware of the local building rules and regulations, climate conditions, soil etc. Having got the sanction of the local authority, detailed working drawings are prepared, giving complete instructions and information to contractors and engineers.
Estimates of materials, equipment, cost and building time are prepared to ensure economy and to facilitate calling of tenders by the client. Today, architects also take into account meteorological aspects, earthquake resistance and Vaastu Shastra, while designing.
The role of present day architects is not limited only to the construction of buildings. They are now being increasingly called upon to undertake two more tasks – landscape architecture and regional and urban planning.
Every one enjoys attractively designed residential areas, public parks, university and college campuses, shopping centres, golf courses, and industrial parks. Landscape architects design these areas so that they are not only functional but aesthetic and environmentally appropriate as well.
They plan the location of buildings and roads and the arrangement of flowers, shrubs and trees and other features of open space. Natural resource conservation and heritage preservation are other important aspects to which landscape architects apply their knowledge of the environment as well as their design and artistic talents.
Architects design a wide variety of buildings, offices, schools, factories, temples, churches, hospitals, houses, airport terminals, flyovers, bridges, shopping centres, residential colonies and apartments etc. Advice is also given by the Architect to plan, improve or beautify landscapes, highways, towns, estates, historical buildings, etc.
Alterations, additions, extensions and adaptation to existing buildings are also planned. Service is also rendered in evaluation of lands and buildings for insurance, sale, mortgage, transfer, taxation and other purposes. The work of an architect is varied, intersecting and creative and offers opportunities to both men and women.
They have to work with engineers, planners, interior decorators and other professionals.
Personal Traits for Success
Personal Traits to be a successful architect, one must possess qualities like excellent communication skills, a keen sense of observation, a sense of aesthetics, awareness of social and cultural factors, environment consciousness, abstract reasoning, visual memory, three – dimensional space perception, the ability to sketch free hand and the ability to work as a team.
God mathematical ability is important as well as the work involves complex designing problems. Imagination, creativity, flexibility, patience, responsibility and accountability are some other important traits.
Employment Opportunities for Architects
Ample Employment Opportunities are available in Centre / State Government Departments, Centre / State Public Works Departments, Irrigation Projects, Railways, Defence Services, Flood Control Boards, Central Water & Power Commission, Road Research Institute, Housing Boards, Co – operative Societies and various other construction units and agencies.
Ministry of Urban Development, National Building Organisation, New Delhi, Town & Country Planning Organisation, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, New Delhi; National Building construction corporation, New Delhi and various city development authorities such as DDA, Ghaziabad Development Authority and Housing societies offer good job opportunities to architects.
In Kolkata and Delhi metro – rail Projects have been taken up. Ministry of Railways, these all activities require the services of architects besides other construction workers. Many architects prefer to set up their own practice. One may also opt for teaching profession.
Architects are now also being called upon to undertake the task of conserving heritage buildings. Computers have now revolutionized the offices of architects with the advent of computer – aided design software such as 3D Studio Max and Auto CAD, the entire concept of designing and modeling. Familiarity with CAD is now an essential requirement for the architects.
Although the subject has not been incorporated formally in the syllabuses of many universities, the present generation of architects must learn the art and science of CAD.
Training Facilities in India
One needs specialized training for becoming an architect. Various polytechnics offer three year diploma in Architectural Assistantship open to matriculates with 45% Marks. The diploma may be upgraded to the level of degree by passing the four year course conducted by the Institute of Architects.
The requirements for this course is 3 Years diploma with 2 Years work experience. Architecture admission to diploma course is based on Marks secured in qualifying examination or through an entrance test of objective nature.
For admission to 3 Years Diploma in Engineering Trades including architecture in polytechnics in Delhi, Common Entrance Test is conducted by GGSIP University, Delhi.
There are more than 100 institutes, which impart training in the field of architecture. The minimum education qualification for admission to degree course is 10+2 with English, Science & Maths with at least 60% Marks.
In most of the Architecture Institutes, the selection is through an entrance examination. Architecture entrance exam is of objective nature consisting questions pertaining to general awareness, English and general intelligence including aptitude test. Duration of the course is generally 5 Years.
After completion B.Arch Course one may go for Post Graduation and Ph.D and specialize in a particular area.

Architecture All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is conducted by CBSE, New Delhi for Architecture admission to B.Tech and B.Arch Courses in various Institutes.
Only those candidates who have passed 10+2 with Physics and Maths and anyone of the followings – Chemistry, Computer Science, Biology and Engineering drawing are eligible for Architecture admission to B.Arch Course.
