In India, poultry rearing evolved over time from traditional farming to integrated highly commercial business and research oriented enterprises just like biotechnology, management studies and computer science.
Presently India is the third largest producer of eggs and fifth largest producer of poultry meat in the world. Indian poultry sector is advancing with growth rate of 10 – 15 % per annum with related to employment opportunities due to changing food habits of young generation, globalization, strong economic growth and liberalization initiated from last few years.
There are different ramifications in poultry sector like nutrition, breeding, housing, hatchery management, health, economic and product technology. Moreover, many new entrepreneurs have started newer species of poultry like Japans quail, turkey, ostrich and Emu for oil, meat and leather production. Poultry specialist can make a career mainly in research, education, business, government & public sector and poultry industry.
Basic Qualification for Poultry Science Post Graduation :
The minimum qualification is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology ( PCB ) for completion of the B.V.Sc and AH degree. ( Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry ). After completion of graduation most of the students opt for Postgraduate Program M.V.Sc ( Master of Veterinary Science ).
The M.V.Sc. is a two – year course and the candidate has the option to specialize in different areas, among that one can choose Poultry Science as a career.

After the graduation ( B.V.Sc & AH ) one can avail the fellowship for doing his post graduation ( M.V.Sc ) in poultry science by qualifying All India Competitive Examination conducted by Indian Council of Agricultural Research ( ICAR ) which award Junior Research Fellowships ( JRF ) for rankers through which, students can secure post graduation seat in all mentioned State Agricultural or Veterinary Universities.
All India ICAR Competitive Exam and Indian Veterinary Research Institute ( IVRI ) Deemed University, offer Senior Research Fellowship ( SRF ) for PhD Program in the discipline of poultry science.
Well – renowned Dr. B. V. Rao Poultry Research Foundation awards Padmashree Dr. B.V. Rao Research Grants for Poultry Post graduates and PhD Scholars annually to promote quality poultry research. Besides this, various fellowship Programs vizard. CSIR / ICMR / Institutes / States are also open for Postgraduate Fellowship Program.
Opportunities for Poultry Post Graduates :
Higher Education :
After post graduation in poultry Science, one can go for higher education Program that is PhD, as there is State or National level test for PhD Program. IVRI offers PhD in poultry science with handsome scholarship for entire Program. If one is interested in overseas studies he may get opportunity through qualifying exam like GRE / TOFEL / IELT for completion of PhD Program.
Successively Post Doctoral Fellowship ( PDF ) is another window will be open after completion of PhD Program. Master of Business Administration or Diploma in Business Management along with poultry post graduation is providing better opportunity in poultry industries at managerial level.
Academic & Research Field :
One who is interested to make his career in teaching or research they have good opportunities as an Assistant professor / Teaching associates in the department of Poultry Science in above mentioned State Veterinary & Agricultural Universities.
Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board ( ASRB ), New Delhi also conduct National eligibility Test ( NET ) for an appointment of Poultry graduates as a Scientist at various National institutes to enhance research quality. One of the most prestigious ramifications of Indian Defense Ministry is Defense Research and Development Organization ( DRDO ) which also prefers Poultry post – graduates to strengthen their research wings.
Consultancy & Self Employment :
Poultry graduate can also earn well package through consultancy visits at different private poultry farms. Due to subject specialization they can advise in better way about high egg, meat productivity and various aspects of poultry rearing. Poultry post graduate have better prospects as an entrepreneur.
After obtaining the post – graduate degree one can start his own enterprise engaging with broiler / layer / quail / emu farming or any other related activity. They can get financial support from NABARD (National Agricultural Bank for Rural Development), Rural Cooperative Banks and Nationalized Banks.
Poultry Industry & Public Sector :
Presently poultry industry in need of poultry specialist due to burning issue of bird flu which is acting as disaster for poultry sector. It is challenge and an opportunity for all poultry related companies with all round development of this sector to catch domestic and export markets.
Poultry post graduate can take up work in any field like hatchery, breeding, nutrition & feed manufacturing, health & biosecurity, economics, products & processing, Management, technical and sale. Moreover, many new entrepreneurs are coming up with new species of poultry like Quail, Turkey, Emu, Ostrich and many pet birds. All these commercial enterprises ask properly trained manpower for successful growth of poultry sector. There are number of opportunities in NGOs / public sectors which are working in the field of poultry rearing.
Some of the nationalized bank like SBI, Bank of Baroda as well ICICI, HDFC are providing loan to startup poultry business, due to which bankers recruiting poultry specialist to have a lot more in this sector specially NABARD is playing pivotal role in this sector.
Veterinary Officer / Subject Matter Specialist :
Almost every state have their own poultry farm for development of livestock policies where Post graduate of poultry science are preferred for incitement of poultry sector as well for live hood of rural people.
Poultry specialist can get job as Veterinary Officer / veterinary Assistant Surgeon / Livestock Development Officer in state government’s poultry farms. Krishi Vigyan Kendra ( KVK ) which works under Agricultural Extension Division, New Delhi also prefer poultry post graduates as Training Associate / Subject matter Specialist for training of farmers and update their knowledge in frontier areas of poultry farming.
