Career in Ceramic Engineering

Ceramic Engineering is the technology of manufacturing and usage of ceramic materials. Many engineering applications benefit from ceramics characteristics as a material. The characteristics of ceramics have garnered attention from engineers across the world, including those in the fields : Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and many others. Highly regarded for being resistant to heat, ceramics can be used for many demanding tasks that other materials like Metal and Polymers can’t.

Ceramics, in addition to being a fine art, also requires a thorough working knowledge of certain materials. Whether we need to design a new office building, or a vase for our bedroom, we need a ceramic engineer. Someone has to figure out our creative designs into a reality and here walks in the engineer. Ceramic Engineers experienced in both scientific and production aspects of the profession may also work as administrators, project supervisors, sales engineers or technical consultants to firms using ceramic materials.

Many Ceramic Engineers work in the nuclear field, as ceramic fuel materials make nuclear power generation possible.

The electronics industry is a growth area for this technology, as ceramics are used as insulators for transistors and integrated circuits.

Refractory ceramics are required in the refining of iron and aluminum, and this industry is especially in need of this type of worker.

The exciting new field of fiber optics has had a dramatic effect on today’s telecommunication and medical industries, and since ceramic components are used, Ceramic Engineers are playing a vital role in this new science. Nature of Work in Ceramic Engineering :

Ceramic Engineers help to develop varied products as protective tiles for space shuttles, ceramic fillings for teeth, Unbreakable dinner plates, and sophisticated telescope lenses. Ceramics have applications in virtually any industry, which demands the use of heat – resistant materials.

Ceramic Engineers are specialists in the study of these materials, their behavior, application, and use. They develop methods for processing nonmetallic inorganic materials into many ceramic products ranging from glassware, fiber optics products, cement, and bricks, to coatings for space vehicles, materials for microelectronics, components of nuclear fuel, and pollution control devices. Recent advances in physics and chemistry have expanded the applications of ceramic engineering.

The major functions of Ceramic Engineers are Research, product development, and production engineering. The engineer is frequently challenged to produce new ideas and to suggest solutions to difficult problems. Engineers may have extensive responsibilities such as preparing labor cost analyses or troubleshooting problems.

From a single chemical source, ceramic engineers make useful materials in many forms :

i ) Develop improved heat tiles to protect the space shuttle and the future supersonic space plane from the searing heat of reentry into the earth’s atmosphere.

ii ) Produce ceramic teeth, bones, and joints to replace parts of the human body or improve advanced medical equipment to continue research in the way against disease. Help make innovative, ultra – fast computer systems using ceramic superconductors, lasers, and glass optical fibers.

iii ) Develop materials to enclose and support aircraft engines that run at high temperatures.

iv ) Improve fiber optic cables that allow doctors to see inside the human body and permit the human voice to travel thousands of miles under the ocean without distortion.

v ) Discover new ways to use ceramics to build highways and bridges, or to carry water and waste to treatment plants.

Ceramic Engineering Personality :

Natural curiosity is important to engineers. Engineers love to figure things out and find out how things are made. It is this mentality that helps propel them through their college classes. Some engineers feel like college was the first time their curiosity could be satisfied. The first time they could delve deep enough into a problem, see all sides of how it worked, and obtain a solution.

The engineering field includes men and women from every culture in the world. One element that all engineers have in common is their desire to help solve the world’s problems and make the world a better place. They often have different perspectives. But they share a problem – solving orientation.

Science and math are the basic tools in an engineers toolkit. Do you find that Math and Science are your greatest challenges, or Do you love to explore more than what has been taught to you in school. Does your text – books satisfy your curiousity or do you go around figuring more about new things on your own. Do you spend more time coping with what is your lab work or more time in the lab by experimenting with new ideas? If you are a later type, you are born with the Engineering Personality.

An engineering education teaches you how to think through a problem in order to solve it. These mental agility skills will help you solve problems for the rest of your life. The fascinating aspect about problem solving in engineering is that there is almost never a right answer. You access several different approaches to solve a problem, and then it is up to you to show everyone how your solution meets the needs of the design.

Eligibility for Career in Ceramic Engineering :

For a diploma in engineering, one must clear the 10th Std. board exam successfully with at least 50% marks. Various polytechnics offer diploma in various disciplines of engineering.

i ) To be eligible for bachelor’s degree course i.e. B.E or BTech, one must clear the 12th std. board exam with at least 50% marks( 60% for IITs ) in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects. Several states and IITs have an entrance exam for admission into engineering, colleges in other states grant admission based on marks scored in 12th Std. exam, particularly in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Diploma holders can also get direct admission into second year of engineering in the same stream in which they have completed their diploma.

ii ) For a master’s level course, one must complete the bachelor’s degree program successfully. Further Studies After graduating students can go in for postgraduate studies ie M.E or M.Tech.

iii ) Further studies up to Ph.D. level are also an option for anyone interested in Research or Academics.

iv ) There is also the Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers ( AMIE ), which enables working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor’s engineering degree through distance education.

Professional Courses for Ceramic Engineering :

Those who work in these fields have been trained in Chemical engineering, Chemistry ( for manufacturing ), Mechanical engineering ( for the study of strength, wear, etc. ), or Electrical engineering and Physics ( for optimization of electric or Magnetic applications ). Specialization in Ceramic Engineering :

Ceramic Engineers often specialize in one or more products :

a ) White wares these are porcelain and china dinnerware or high voltage electrical insulators.

b ) Structural materials these are brick, tile, and turbine blades.

c ) Electronic ceramics are magnetics, memory systems, and microwave devices ), protective.

d ) Refractory coatings for metals, glass products, abrasives, and fuel elements for nuclear energy.

One of the top priority projects of Ceramic Engineers is the development of a ceramic engine which would replace the present diesel, gasoline and turbo engines.

Ceramic Engineering Remunerations :

i ) Fresher’s can get a starting salary of ₹ 9,000 to ₹ 13,000 per month excluding other allowances. In the government sector, the salary range of diploma holders is ₹ 5,000 to ₹ 9,000 per month.

ii ) Lecturers in colleges get a starting salary of ₹ 12,000 – ₹ 13,000 a month.

iii ) With more experience or as an established independent consultant one could earn more.

iv ) Senior engineers can earn anywhere in between ₹ 30,000 and ₹ 50,000 a month. Those at management levels can earn up to ₹ 60,000 or even more.

In addition to salaries, engineers working with government departments are also entitled to a lot of incentives and perks. The increments are purely performance based as well as position based.
