Choosing and Managing the Career
A very common question in the minds of young educated individuals arises as to which career to choose, after completion of education.
This is the most crucial moment in an individual’s life after the individual steps out from the college or university, and chooses a career. The choice that the individual makes at that point of time determines the rest of the course of his / her life.
If the career opted by the individual is tight, the chances of success become high. If it is not, there is probability of failure and struggle throughout the life.
Most of the individuals at their study stage dream to become successful computer engineers, doctors, scientists or bureaucrats. Many students do follow their parents’ wishes and are able to build a secure career for themselves.
Since everyone does not have the aptitude nor he or she can clear the difficult competitive examinations, it results very often in frustration.
The key to career success lies in doing things well and not in following what others are better if youngsters choose a career that they have interest in.
Success and failure are both sides of a coin. We have noticed that after many un – successful attempts and wasting years in preparing for competitive examinations, some individuals are forced to take up Jobs they may not like.
The process of wastage of precious years of an individual could have been avoided, if the aptitude of, the individual or self – assessment was done earlier.
The individual would have been advised to do something else, if he / she is not fit for that particular profession. In Indian social environment, choosing a right career is a difficult task because young educated individuals receive variety of career counseling and suggestions from different sectors.
Similarly, in many cases, the parents are usually involved, insistent and influence their children’s career. All such things are always not very objective and purposeful and more often they may lead to wrong career decisions.
Choosing and managing a career requires serious thinking and decision making. First is the question of aptitude. It is necessary not to be overwhelmed by stories of high salaries that others are getting, since each profession offers the possibility to earn more than others.
The aptitude question is also important to find out whether the individual can be successful in certain professions. At all times, it is important to remember that our life is a product of the choices that we make.
A right choice can take us to the very top in life, while one wrong decision can give us a life full of struggle and frustration. One of such crucial choices in life is the choice of a career, which can determine the future course of our destiny.
Choosing a career is an important decision. However, taking one type of job at the present moment does not mean one will stay forever in the same profession.
An individual must have to focus on his / her personality, skills and interests and find a career that is a perfect match. The most highly paid professionals, for instance, are not always the management professionals or software engineers.
A successful doctor or a reputed journalist or a fashion designer might be able to earn more money. Students preparing for civil services would do well to find out whether they are cut out for the job rather than spend years trying to pass tests that they cannot.
It is not a matter of intelligence alone, it is a matter of aptitude also. Another important thing is commitment and measuring one’s cababilities.
It is important to be honest with yourself, assess the kind of time you can put in and the resources you have at your disposal. Do not be misled by glamorous professions but choose something which will suit you.
Analysis of Inner Strength
Inherent strengths and weaknesses are the factors which must be recognised by making self – introspection of an individual. Self – assessment of own strengths and weaknesses would reveal to an individual his / her inner potential.
The assessment of inner potential can also be measured by talking to successful persons, observing own reactions in the times of distress and comparing self achievements with the achievements of the group as a whole on several issues of importance.
This self – analysis also brings out the confidence and aptitude of an individual. Knowing one’s values will be very important to prepare, adjust and survive well in his / her career.
A self – analysis provides one with a deep and fruitful insight into hidden potentials, strengths and weaknesses which would assist an individual to choose a career.
For instance, the strength could lie in educational and professional qualifications, experience, moral strength, ability to convince people, business acumen and aptitude, capacity and quest for producing results, etc.
Similarly, the weaknesses could be in terms of qualifications, lack of experience, lack of self – confidence, lack of confidence in dealing with people, etc.
An objective analysis will ensure a proper direction to one’s career. After choosing one of the three paths, an individual can set goals that needed to be achieved.
Take enough time to analyse your interests and know what truly excites you and drives you smoothly in terms of a career. If you follow your natural instinct and go with your natural ability, you can march ahead of others in the race.
This is an important factor that an individual professionally and technically has to be absolutely sure about himself / herself. In addition to that general awareness of the environmental variables is a must.
This awareness includes knowledge about day – to – day developments including the socio – political system, economic planning, world economy and geography, current news and affairs about home and foreign countries, etc.
Such awareness cannot be acquired overnight and needs constant inputs over the years and regular reading of newspapers and magazines.
A sharp mind with a detailed knowledge of the environment around is the way to succeed in any sphere ranging from self – employment to the other services.
In case of competitions and interviews for jobs, such awareness goes a long way in helping an individual to succeed by having edge over others.
In case of self – employment, a person fully conversant with surroundings and environment political, social and economic is having a chance to succeed and put his / her competitors in shade.
A candidate who is technically and professionally fully equipped to take on the challenges of life and is confident of handling the situation on the basis of his / her knowledge, is always ahead above others in every sphere of life.
Everyone wants to become a ‘professional’ these days or to work in a professionally managed organisation. Among the meanings of the word ‘professional’ in the dictionary, there are two which are connected with the way we work.
One is something that is related to a job or profession. The other means well – trained, or a person who is good at one’s work. To be a professional, therefore, implies that a person is good in his job and can be depended upon.
Clearly, it is easy to be a professional in the first sense. If we do anything over and over again in our lives, we become professionals of some sort. The second implication, however, seems more difficult.
It is better to do a job that is done with a passion than one which is done without it. These are simple instances of professional and nonprofessional behaviour.
Simply doing a job over and over again does not make the individual a professional. We may find people who have been working in a job for years; they certainly cannot be called professionals, no matter what their qualifications are.
