Eligibility for Admission and Syllabus for Competitive Examination
Undergraduate Degree Program :
Any Indian citizen of 17 – 23 Years age is consideed eligible for admission. Candidate should have passed 10+2 ( Intermediate / Senior Secondary Examination ) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Mathematics / Agriculture / Home Science Subjects Combination. Candidates belonging to general category should have minimum 50 % marks and those belonging to scheduled caste / scheduled tribe, physically handicapped catefory 40 % to be considered eligible for the AIEEA – UG examination conducted by ICAR, Pusa, New Delhi.
In this exmination questions are asked from two streams; Stream A and Stream B. Under Stream A questions from Physics, Chemistry and Agriculture / Biology subjects are asked, whereas, under Steeam B questions from physics, chemistry and mathematics subjects are asked. The examination is of 2.30 hrs duration consisting of multiple choice type 60 questions from physics, 60 questions from chemistry and 60 questions from Agriculture / Biology / Mathematics. In all 180 questions are to be attempted. Each question carries 4 marks. There is provision of negative marking in examination.
For each correct answer 4 marks is awarded and for each incorrect answer one mark is deducted from total score. Candidates opting a stream in examination are considered eligible for admission to UG Degree Program in SAUs in Horticulture, Agriculture, Forestry, Fishery Science, Home Science, Sericulture, Biotechnology and Food Science and Technology. Those opting B stream in examination are considered eligible for admission to Agriculture Engineering, Dairy Technology, Food Science, and Agricultural Marketing, Banking & Cooperation. Postgraduation Program for this program candidates having completed 4 Years degree program in Agriculture / Horticulture are considered eligible. The minimum age of the candidate should be 19 Year
In the entrance examination, multiple choice and matching type 160 ( 150 + 10 ) questions are asked which are of 650 marks. Negative system of evaluation exists in the examination. For every correct answer 4 marks are awarded and that for every incorrect answer one mark is deducted. However, under matching type question, for every correct matching answer one mark is awarded and in case of incorrect answer 0.2 mark is deducted. The examination comprises one paper of 2.30 hrs duration.
Doctoral ( Ph.D ) Program :
For admission to Ph.D Program different agricultural universities excercise different modes of admission. To provide financial support to the candidates pursuing Ph.D degree, a competetive examination is organized by the following at all India level. National Academy of Agricultural Research Management ( NAARM ),
Hyderabad – 500 407 ( AP ).
Postgrduates in horticulture of not more than 30 Years age in case of general category, 33 Years in case of other backward classes ( OBC ), 35 Years in case of scheduled caste / tribe and physically handicapped category and 45 Years in case of in service candidates are considered eligible. The candidates belonging to general category should have 55% marks and those belonging to scheduled caste / tribe and physically handicapped category 50 % marks in qualifying PG degree to be eligible for entrance examination.
The competitive examination consists of two papers, both of multiple choice type. The first paper consists of questions based on general awareness in agriculture along with questions of general knowledge. The second paper consists of questions of postgraduate standard from horticulture subjects only.
Other Academic Programs :
PG Horticulture degree holding candidate are eligible for M.Phil. The Program is offered by the following address :

Candidates aspiring for Diploma Program can pursue it in the field of Nursery management from Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar – 608 002 ( Tamilnadu ).
Indira Gandhi National Open University ( IGNOU ), New Delhi organizes Program in the field of Fruit and Vegetable preservation, Food Technology and Post – harvest management etc. Some foreign institutions offer UG and PG Program in horticultural therapy. The Program lays emphasis on restoration of health and cure of ailments through horticultural produce.
To attract deserving candidates and also to help support the needy ones, fellowships are available for pursuing different degree Programs. Candidates who qualify AIEEA – UG examination organized by Indian Council of Agricultural Research ( ICAR ), New Delhi get monthly fellowship for 1000/- ( One thousand only ) for entire 4 Years tenure of the UG degree.
In addition to this, the council provides monthly post – matric fellowship to schedule caste / tribe candidates for 300/- ( Three hundred ) vis – a – vis, annual grant of 750/- ( Seven Hundred Fifty ) under graduation degree Program. Candidates whose father’s income is less than one lac/- annum are provided merit cum means monthly fellowship worth 500/- ( Five hundred ) during graduate degree Program.
For pursuing PG Program, ICAR offer monthly fellowship for 8640/- ( Eight thousand six hundred forty ) for 2 Years along with annual contingency grant of 6000/- ( Six thousand ) to meet expenses on the purchase of books, chemicals, equipments, tour etc. Fellowship is also awarded by the ICAR for pursuing Ph.D. Degree. This fellowship is 12000/- ( Twelve thousand ) per month during first and second Year of the Program and 14000/- ( Fourteen Thousand ) per month during third Year of study.
The candidates also receive annual contingency grant for 10000/- ( Ten thousand ) during entire study period of three Year Another option of fellowship for Ph.D. degree especially for scheduled caste / tribe candidates is available with the following address :

The commission grants monthly fellowships worth 14000/- ( Fourteen Thousand ) for first and second Years of the Ph.D Program and 15000/- ( Fifteen thousand ) for remaining periods of study maximum upto five Year
Alongwith fellowship amount, annual grant worth 12000/- ( Twelve thousand ) for initial two Years of the study and 25000/- ( twenty five thousand ) for rest duration of the study is admissible.
In Rajasthan girl candidates studying in horticulture / agriculture Program receive incentive worth 5000 ( Five thousand ) at UG / PG level and those studying in Ph.D worth 10000/- ( Ten thousand ) per annum.
The incentive is available on studying in any approved agricultural institution situated in the state. It can be had through state department of agriculture from its offices located in the district in which the candidate is studying upon completion of necessary formalities.
Postgraduate degree holders are considered eligible for scientist cadre post. For this purpose, from time to time, Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board ( ASRB ), Pusa, New Delhi – 110 012 releases advertisement. For recruitment, ASRB holds Agricultural Research Services ( ARS ) examination at all India level. The Pre – ARS examination is of 2.30 hrs duration consisting of 200 questions of objective type. Out of these 200 questions, 50 questions pertain to agriculture and allied subjects which includes questions from agricultural sciences, animal husbandry, fishery, natural resource management, social sciences, agricultural engineering and technology and dairy science.
Rest of 150 questions relate to horticulture subject. Candidates who qualify preliminary examination are eligible for final examination. The final examination is of three hours duration and it carries 240 marks. In this examination questions having descriptive type answers are asked. The candidates who qualify final examination are called in for interview which is of 60 marks. On the basis of total score secured in the final examination as well as interview, a list of successful candidate is prepared. The selected candidates are finally recommended for appointment as Scientists at the different horticultural research stations located across the country.
As Administrator :
There is a set up of horticulture department in almost every state in the country. Under this department there is positions of Horticulture Officer, Assistant Director, Deputy Director, Joint Director and Director. Alongwifh, this under Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, there is opportunity to render service in various capacities.
As Expert in the Field of Landscaping :
In every city there is garden – park, avenue plantation etc. To care and maintain them appointment is made for the post of Horticulturist, Garden Superintendent and Garden Supervisor. Graduates / Postgraduate in the field of horticulture are eligible for such services. The services of experts in this field are also required in the maintenance of bungalow compounds, ornamental gardening, architectural design of building etc.
As Teacher :
Right from school education Upton university level, for teaching the subject concerned administration / board / organizations etc make recruitment of suitable candidates. For school education graduate with B.Ed qualification, for college education postgraduate with or without M.Phil and for university colleges Postgraduate / Ph. D. Degree holder having qualified National Eligibility Test ( NET ) are eligible. The ARS / NET examination is combined and the syllabus for both examinations is same.
As Manager :
To manage estate plantation like that of tea and coffee, garden managers are required. They are supposed to manage entire production, processing, postharvest handling and marketing of the crop.
As Therapist : The candidates having degree in horticulture therapy can offer their services in health sector.
As Assistant : Those possessing technical skill in garden art – nursery management, bonsai, lawn, hedge, edge, herbaceous border, shrubbery border, carpet bedding, topiary, indoor gardening, pot gardening, window gardening, sill gardening, processed product preparation etc are deployed for their services.
