Career as Material Engineering

Materials Engineering in India is taught through technical schools, colleges and university departments at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The course is also known as Materials Science or Materials Science & Engineering.

This branch of engineering primarily deals with properties of matter and applications of materials in various domains of science and engineering. Materials Engineering is an interdisciplinary field and makes hot career choice for would be engineers, because of its vastness of applications.

A course in materials engineering or materials science teaches relation between structure of matter at atomic or molecular scale and macroscopic properties of materials. Course work in materials engineering includes applied physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.

With the arrival of new sciences like nano science and nanotechnology, materials science gained momentum in technical colleges and universities. Materials Science also makes an integral part of forensic engineering and failure analysis.

Students who study materials engineering are called materials engineers. They deal with extracting, developing, processing, and testing of different materials and minerals. Various materials and minerals are used in the production of consumer goods ranging from washroom utilities to airplane, computers, and war guns, the list is endless.

Materials Engineers creates new materials from ceramics, metals, plastics, semiconductors and composites needed for chemical, electrical, and mechanical industries. These engineers also select new materials for new applications and products.

Materials Engineering Eligibility Criteria

To embark in highly lucrative and well paying career of materials engineering one require studying materials engineering at college and university level. Various degrees like Bachelor of Engineering ( B.E. ), Bachelor of Technology ( B.Tech. ) are awarded at the undergraduate level. Students passed with physics, chemistry, mathematics and English at 10+2 course or equivalent level can study materials engineering undergraduate course. Entrance Exam conducted for admission.

GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is necessary for admission into postgraduate programs like Master of Engineering ( M.E. ), Master of Technology ( M.Tech. )., Doctoral and Postdoctoral studies are also offered through various universities.

Materials Engineering Career Prospects

Materials Engineers begin working in manufacturing or technical support industry, and lateer moves onto management, development and sales, consulting or research. Materials Engineers works at the forefront of many industries as every new piece of product gets derived from some set of materials. For example, the advancement that we see today in telecommunications and cellular phones become possible due to contributions of materials engineers.

In microelectronics, materials engineers work on making microelectronic units smaller, faster and cost effective. They focus on increasing the capacity of magnetic memory devices like hard drives and storage capacity of permanent magnetic devices. Materials engineers are guiding the development of strong, lightweight composites in high-tech industries like aeronautical.

Today, we have lightweight aircraft, smart clothing fibers, increased fuel efficiency all due to developments in materials sciences and contributions of materials engineers and scientists. Materials Engineers are in steady demand in manufacturing industries all over the world.

Materials Engineering Career Remuneration

Materials Engineers find work opportunities in both government and private sectors. A graduate material engineer in India can earn starting salary of ₹ 15000 to ₹ 20000 a month. Various allowances like HRA, TA, DA, health benefits etc are also offered by the employing agency to these engineers.

For materials engineers, salary is not the limiting factor, and increases with gain in experiences and promotions. Earning factors also depends on higher qualification like a masters degree in materials engineering, or in business administration or research degree. Materials Engineers also gets employment opportunities as researchers in R&D laboratories and in academia as lectures and professors.
