Ph.D. in Stem Cell Research

Nichi – in Centre for Regenerative Medicine ( NCRM ), the first centre for Regenerative Medicine in India, is an institute carrying our research, training (both scientists and physicians) clinical applications – protocol development in regenerative medicine based on cell therapeutics, with emphasis on stem cells. It is deemed to be the first of It’s kind of India. And it is believed to break new grounds in Regenerative Medicine.

Niche – in Centre for Regenerative Medicine ( NORM ), Chennai, an Indo – Japanese venture, has launched an Academic Program of doctorate level research leading to a PhD degree in stem cell research. Awarded by the Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, the two institutions have also signed a MoU for collaboration on research and academic activities in the field of stem cell research.

The first of its kind in the country where clinical doctors and basic scientists are enrolling in the four Year PhD Program, they will jointly work on a topic chosen for the Year to find solutions for several diseases which are now reckoned, incurable. The MoU will also allow joint research meetings, seminars and training Programs among and by the two institutes, notes Dr.Samuel JK Abraham, Director, NORM. Currently there is no such comprehensive training Program in Regenerative Medicine is available anywhere in India.

Niche – in Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NORM), the first centre for Regenerative Medicine in India is an institute carrying out research, training (both scientists and physicians) clinical applications – protocol development in regenerative medicine based on cell therapeutics, with emphasis on stem cells. “There should be an interaction between basic scientists and clinical doctors to solve any problem in the field of medicine that is possible here”, says Dr Samuel.

“Stem cells are like wet clay. Depending on how wet it is, it can be shaped into any form. I believe that we can do a lot on stem cells, as India has a plenty of potential”, he adds.

Eligibility :

Selected candidates will be given a stipend ( Rupee 12,000 ) equal to that of a senior research fellow as much as stipulated by the Indian Council for Medical Research.

Three candidates have been selected for this Year for research on Hematopoetic Stem Cells. Fixing the maximum number of entrants at six, application for next Year will start from 1 May, 2009.

Categories of PhD Enrollment :

  • NORM sponsored candidates, who have completed 3 Years of work tenure in NORM.
  • Self – sponsored candidates : From applications received from outside.

Stem Cell Research Definition :

Stem cells are cells, proficient of regeneration through cell division and can, as a result differentiate into a diverse range of specialised cell types.

Research dedicated to studying the process can be broadly seen as stem cell research. Canadian scientists Ernest A. Mc.Culloch and James E. Till laid the foundation for stem cell research with their findings in the 1960s. Research in this field and subsequent stem cell transplantation can help cure many killer ailments like Diabetes Mellitus, Chronic Hepatitis, Cirrhosis of the Liver, Parkinson’s Disease, Spinal Chord Injury, Genetic and Chromosomal Diseases like Down’s Syndrome and the likes.

Question of Ethics :

The two types of mammalian stem cells are Embryonic Stem Cells and Adult Stem Cells that are found in, adult tissues. Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research is Controversial because, research requires the Elimination of a Human Embryo.

“We are not using embryonic or foetal stem cell at our research centre. We are only looking at adult organ stem cell. No one here has to worry about the question of ethics”, observes Samuel.
