Career in Defence Services : : Eligibility for Indian Defence Career

Of all the professions, a career in the Defence Services is the noblest and indeed the most sacred one. If you are imbibed with a patriotic zeal and strong passion to safeguard the frontiers of the country from enemy attacks, if you like the simple and honest army ways compared to the civilian life full of hassles and uninvited difficulties.

If you love a disciplined life, then you should opt for Defence services, i.e., a career with Indian Army, Air force or Navy. As a Defence Personnel, you will be called upon to protect the pride and honour of the country. Besides this, our brave men in Defence Services, have always risen to the occasion in rendering yeoman’s service to salvage and protect life and property in the event of a Natural Catastrophe – be it a Flood, Earthquake, Cyclone, Tsunami, etc.

Thus you have the twin opportunities of defending the national frontiers from foreign aggression as also serving the civil society in the event of various calamities. A career in the defence forces is all about accepting the thrills and adventures, as also facing the challenges at the risk of your life.

There are a few institutions in the country that can provide you a career like the defence forces do. They are perhaps the only organizations where you can pick up skill in Management, Computers, Communication, Human Nature and Sports. Also, you get a chance to excel in adventure and sports activities. There are two ways of getting into the defence forces – through the National Defence Academy Examination ( NDA Exam ) or through the Combined Defence Services Exam ( CDSE ).

The NDA is meant for all those who have completed or are going to complete their 10+2 level of education. And if one has missed the bus due to one or the other reason, one still has a chance to get into these highly coveted services, after one has completed graduation. The CDSE is for all those people who have completed their graduation.

National Defence Academy & Naval Academy :

On the basis of a written examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission twice every year, in January & July, eligible candidates are selected for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force Wings of the NDA and Naval Academy. Those who qualify in the competitive written examination, have to appear for an intelligence and personality test conducted by Service Selection Board.

The written examination comprising Maths and General Ability Test is of 2½ hours duration each, carrying 300 and 600 marks, respectively. Entry to NDA and Naval Academy restricted to unmarried male candidates between 16½ to 19 years of age who are citizens of India, Bhutan, Nepal and migrants from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam. The candidates have to give an undertaking not marry till the completion of their full training.

Educational Qualifications :

Army Wings of NDA : Pass in the 10+2 or equivalent examination conducted by a State Educational Board or a University.

Air Force & Naval Wings of NDA : Pass in the 10+2 or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University with Physics and Maths.

A candidate recommended by the Services Selection Board has to undergo a medical examination by a Board or Service Medical Officers. The minimum acceptable height is 157.5 cm ( 162.5 cm for Air Force ). There is a relaxation in the height by 5 cm for Gurkhas or candidates from North East and 2 cms for those from Lakshadweep. The selected candidates for the three services, i.e., Army, Navy and Air Force are imparted preliminary training – both academic and physical – for 3 years at NDA.

The training during the first two and a half years is common to the cadets of the three wings. On passing out, the cadets are awarded B.Sc./ B.A. Degree by JNU, Delhi. On passing out from NDA, army cadets go to the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun while Naval and Air Force Cadets are sent to the cadets Training Ship and AFA, Hyderabad / BFTS, Allahabad.
