Indian Institute of Packaging Invited to Bangalore

Commissioner for Industries M. Maheshwar on September 9, 2011 invited the Indian Institute of Packaging ( IIP ), Mumbai, to set up its unit in Bangalore to offer courses to students in the State. He promised that the State Government was ready to allot a suitable site in the city for the purpose.

Inaugurating an all – India workshop on packaging of processed and other ethnic foods organised by the IIP and Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries here, Mr. Maheshwar announced that the Government would provide all facilities to the institute which was welcomed by entrepreneurs.

Mr. Maheshwar said that the packaging industry should think of ways to dispose of waste generated in the city or recycle it. Could the industry also use bio – degradable material for packaging? he asked. He said that cluster of industries in an industrial estate could have common packaging facility or for disposing of waste to maintain a clean and green environment.

IIP director N.C. Saha, who delivered the keynote address, said that the loss was substantial in transporting fresh agro produces due to improper packaging.

This is a main bottleneck in realising enormous export potential of value added agro products. Packaged processed food will be hygienic and nutritional, he said and added that the cost would not be high.

Mr. Saha said that per capita consumption of packaging material was 6.7 kg in India, as compared to 208.3 kg in France, 172.5 kg in Japan, 164.9 kg in Germany, 11.5 kg in China and 21 kg in Korea. Packaging would also increase the shelf – life of food items, whose production was increasing. The Union Government is setting up 30 mega food parks in the country and they would have food packaging and satellite testing centres.

He invited packaging entrepreneurs to attend the national conference on modern trends in packaging of food and pharmaceutical products in Hyderabad on November 25, 2011.

Chairman of IIP, Hyderabad, Chakravarthi welcomed the gathering. IIP Vice-Chairman Diwakar Shetty and Deputy Director B.K. Karna spoke.
