5. Occupational Therapy :
Occupational therapy focuses on helping individuals with mental or physical disabilities. As an occupational therapist you will have to help people improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily life.
You have to work with the people who are mentally, physically or emotionally disable.
Occupational therapist helps clients not only to improve their basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, but also to compensate for permanent loss of function.
Occupational therapists are in high demand in the conventional medical and fitness arena. There are diplomas, postgraduate diploma and postgraduate degree courses available for you to get trained in this profession.
6. Dialysis Technology :
You have to function in multiple roles when you work as a dialysis technologist. As a dialysis technologist, you will learn elements of haemodialysis, chemistry of body fluids, water balance in the human body, renal anatomy and physiology, haemodialysis devices, infusion control and standard precautions etc.
They will be employed as dialysis technologist and dialysis therapist. They will get jobs in the dialysis equipment manufacturing field also.
To be a dialysis technologist, you should have passed plus two education with mathematics, biology, sciences and English as subject.
To be a qualified dialysis technologist you have to undergo diploma, degree, postgraduate diploma or postgraduate degree in the related subject.
7. Respiratory Therapy :
As a respiratory therapist you evaluate and treat patients, suffering from breathing disorders, you test the capacity of patient’s lungs and analyze oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration.
You also measure patients potential for hydrogen which indicates the acidity or the alkalinity levels of the blood.
Some times they will get the job of polysomnographic technologist. Here the technologist performs, monitors and scores sleep studies. They treat people with complaints of snoring.
Respiratory therapist is integral part of the healthcare team providing services such as ventilator management, cardiopul-monary resuscitation and oxygen and aerosol therapy.
As a respiratory therapist you will also form part of the team assisting high-risk birth. Employment opportunities are very high. Diploma, degree, postgraduate diploma and postgraduate degrees are available.
8. Medical Dosimetry :
The medical Dosimetrist is the vital member of radiation oncology team. They will design a treatment plan to determine a treatment field technique that will deliver the prescribed radiation dose accurately.
Dosimetrist should posses an understating of the technical aspects of the radiation oncology and medical physics to derive computerized treatment plans and communicate these aspects to radiation oncologist for plan approval and to radiation therapist for plan implementation.
They are able to perform quality assurance test of therapy instrument. They should have a working knowledge of radiation safety and current rules and regulations of atomic energy regulatory board.
In India to work as a medical Dosimetrist people can opt for radiation physics courses as well as medical physics.
It is available as postgraduate diploma, postgraduate degree, and advanced diploma after post graduation etc.
9. Perfusion Technology :
During an open heart operation the cardiopulmonary bypass (heart lung) machine maintains patient’s life by taking over the functions of heart and lungs.
Perfusion technologist set up and operates the heart lung machine and other sophisticated equipments used in the operating room.
In addition “perfusionist”, directed by surgeon and anesthesiologist, are responsible for regulating the patient’s level of oxygen and carbondioxide.
At times, perfusionists administer anesthetic or other pharmaceutical agent through the cardio pulmonary bypass circuit.
To perform these tasks perfusionist must thoroughly understand the body’s circulatory system and must be able to operate complex equipments.
Although perfusion technologists usually work in hospitals affiliated with large medical centers, they may also work in educational institutions as researchers or lecturers.
Courses are available in diploma, degree and post graduation levels.
10. Sterilization Technology :
Methods and conditions of sterilization process, and how it is monitored are very important subjects in hospital. Sterilization techniques are getting more complex each day.
Each hospital or health organization has a different method for dealing with hospital infections, which are a major threat to human and hospital health.
The sterilization technologist should be the team leader for sterilization section as well as infection control wing. They are capable of providing safe, low cost of good quality working environment for hospitals.
They should have a thorough knowledge of aim of decontamination, role of infection control, different sterilization practices, validation of sterilization, role of instruments in surgery, instrument care, steps to be taken during arrangement and packing, use of sterilization indicators, re-use of single use devices, storage and distribution, quality control etc.
Also they should aware about the occupational risk factor.Courses are available in diploma and postgraduate diploma levels.
