Some of the major institutes which provide training in Merchant Navy have been briefly discussed here as follows :
Training Ship Chanakya :
It imparts maritime education and training to the future navigating officers. It is affiliated to University of Mumbai as a degree college for a 3 – year course in Nautical Engineering. The selection for admission to T.S. Chanakya and Marine Engineering is made through a Joint Entrance Examination ( JEE ) conducted by IITs. The upper age limit for admission to T.S. Chanakya is 20 years for general candidates and 25 years for SC / ST candidates.
For admission, a candidate should pass 10+2 or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects. T.S. Chanakya provides 3 – year B.Sc. ( Nautical Science ) degree. The institute takes 30,000 a year for the course in which it provides tuition, boarding and fooding facilities.
A three – month pre – sea course is also offered for aspiring deck cadets. T.S. Chanakya also prepares cadets for the navigation discipline ( Master,. Chief Officer, etc. ) & MERI imparts training to candidates for Marine Engineering Discipline viz., Chief Engineer, Second Engineers, etc.
I. Marine Engineering and Research Institute :
MERI, the oldest marine engineering college in India, is located in Kolkata. It is affiliated to Jadhavpur University. The admission to this academy is done through the IIT – JEE screening test. The institute charges 1,00,000 per annum while it offers 50 percent remission in fee structure for girls. MERI imparts training to candidates for Marine Engineering Discipline viz., Chief Engineer, Second Engineers, etc.
MERI also has its branch in Mumbai. It is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. It is the only marine engineering institute in India which provides polyvalent / dual certifications for Indian Merchant Navy Officers and for employment onboard the ships. The fee structure here is 1.5 lakh per annum. The female cadets are provided with the facility of 100 percent fee waiver except for mess, notebooks, etc.
II. Merchant Marine Education & Research Trust ( MMERT ) :
Located in Mumbai, it offers pre – sea training to unmarried citizens in Nautical discipline of the Merchant Navy for a short – term course, at T.S. Chanakya.
III. Academy of Maritime Education & Training, Chennai :
AMET offers 4 – year Residential B.S. Degree Programme in Marine Engineering and 3 years Diploma courses in Maritime Studies and 3½ years Diploma in Nautical Engineering.
IV. LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research :
The institute was set up in 1948 by the Ministry of Transport. The LAB CAMSAR offers 31 post – sea courses which have the capability to match the standards of the International Maritime Organization and the Government of India.
The institute has a student strength of 1,200 at any point of time, which makes it the largest maritime training college in the world in regard of the student turnover i.e. 17,000 enrollments per year.
