Eligibility for Social Development Courses : : Prospects in Social Development Course
Successful completion of the 10+2 or its equivalent examination, in any discipline, is the minimum educational qualification required to go in for a Bachelor’s program in Social Work. For pursuing B.A. ( Honours. ) in Social Work with specialisation in rural development at the TISS ( Tata Institute of Social Sciences ), one has to have a minimum of 50 percent marks at the 10+2 exam in the first place. The selection for the Bachelor’s Degree course is on the basis of a written test followed by a personal interview.
A Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology or any other related discipline like Biology, Economics, or Political Science is the minimum educational qualification required to pursue a Master’s program in Social Work or Sociology. A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work is not a mandatory eligibility criteria for pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Admission to the Master’s Degree is on the basis of a written test followed by a group discussion and a personal interview. Specialists in different fields are also eligible to pursue this Master’s program.
An altruistic bent of mind, coupled with a love for mankind, is the first and foremost quality required to make a career in this field. One should be hard working and have the willingness to work in remote places under hostile conditions. Excellent communication skills are required in this field since one has to interact with people from all strata of the society and understand their problems. One should have good liaisoning capabilities in order to deal with several small and large organisations.
Moreover, one should have very good management skills in order to take the lead in organising campaigns, managing resources and monitoring the progress. Professional courses in Social Work are available in more than 35 recognised institutes in the country. Courses are available at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, M.Phil, and Ph.D. levels in most schools of Social Work. The three-year Bachelor’s in Social Work ( BSW ) program qualifies students to work in areas like human rights, disaster management, health, education, natural resources management and gender issues. The course curriculum is extended to practical work as well and students are given the opportunity of working in actual conditions by engaging them in fieldwork.
The two-year Master’s in Social Work ( MSW ) program gives students the formal training to work in this sector. One can specialise in any particular area at this level. Specialisation in various areas like gender studies, women’s issues and development studies are available in various institutes. Specialisations in development studies are also offered by several universities and institutes abroad like the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London and the University of Sussex.

Specialisation in Social Development is required in order to make the work productive and effective. Victims of natural disasters, for example, require specialists from different fields who would provide adequate help for them.
