Meaning of Telecommunication
The term “Telecommunication” is a combination of two words. “Tele” – means from a distance and “communication” – means exchange of information or message. Telecommunication may also be defined as a mode or the means of communication from a far away distance.
History of Telecommunication in India
Evolution of Telephone revolutionized the world. The Telecommunication sector had a slow and uneasy start in India. As soon as Telephone services came into practice people started using it extensively. The Telephone services became popular within a few Years. Telegraph services were also employed for very fast communication but service’s were expensive thus people preferred Telephone services. First Telephone exchanges were established in 1880 at three places Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. Demand for Telephones was ever increasing, hence Department of Telecommunication Government of India introduced “National Telecommunication Policy” in 1994 which brought major changes.

In the beginning the ownership of facilities was restricted only to the Government owned organizations like DOT and VSNL. In 1997, Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ) was set up. After the establishment of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited ( BSNL ), which provided Telecommunication services to the major part of India, Telephone services gained momentum. Now it is the 7th largest telecom, company in the world. Bharti Telecom, Tata Indicom, Vodafone, MTNL, Idea and BPL were allowed to operate in the following Years.
Status of Telecommunication in India
India’s Mobile Phone market is the fastest growing in the world, with companies adding some 6 million new customers per month. In wireless segment, 16 million subscribers have been added in March 2009. Tele density was 4% till 2001. The overall tele-density has increased to 37%. Today almost every village has the access to Telephone with STD / ISD facility. Mobile Phones are also in use in smaller cities and villages. In addition to its wide spread usage in towns and capitals ( of Indian states ). Better connectivity reduced the cost of traveling and helped common men and businessmen in expanding their business. Every district head quarters are connected to internet which added to Computer Knowledge of People. Kerala is the only state which is having the 100% population with computer literacy. Internet subscribers are increasing rapidly. Broadband Connections are available in villages where basic Telephone Connections are existing. According to recent announcement Government of India will connect 66, 822 revenue villages with Village Public Telephones ( VPT ) in the country under Bharat Nirman Program. Career Opportunities in Private Companies of Repute. Professionals from Telecommunication, field may get a well paid job in reputed Private companies. Candidates are offered with the Posts of Graduate Engineer Trainees ( GET ) in the beginning for the period of 6 months to 1 Year. Thereafter they are given Posts like : Transmission Engineer Network Engineer R.F. Engineer Switching Engineer Microwave Engineer Testing Engineer Service Engineer Process Engineer etc.
Job Opportunities in Public Sector
Apart from private companies public sector undertakings ( PSUs ) also provide employment to the candidates from this background. BSNL and MTNL offer for the Posts of Junior Telecom Officer ( JTOs ) and Technical Telecom Assistants ( TTAS ). Similar officer level Posts are also offered by other Government of India PSUs like :
