CATE Entrance Examination 2021
The Combined Aptitude Test for English ( CATE ), introduced by the Department of English, University of Delhi in 2009, is a centralised test meant to evaluate a student’s aptitude for the study of B.A. ( Hons. ) in French / German / Spanish / Italian offered by the University.

Eligibility for CATE 2021
CATE Eligibility is as per the University rules of eligibility for admission to any BA ( Hons ) course.
For calculating their aggregate marks candidates may use any one of the following subject combinations :
- English plus any 3 academic subjects ( including Languages ) or
- English plus 2 academic subjects ( including languages ) plus one vocational subject
General category candidates should have a minimum of 45% marks in the Class XII Board Examinations.
OBC candidates ( non – creamy layer ) will be given a relaxation of 10% of the minimum eligibility marks prescribed for the General category candidates. The eligibility therefore would be 40.5% ( 10% of 45 subtracted from 45% ).
Children / Widows of eligible Armed Forces personnel (CW) will be given a concession of 5% marks in the minimum eligibility requirements, i.e. these candidates should have scored 40% marks in their Class XII Board Examinations to be eligible for appearing in CATE.
SC / ST candidates and Persons with Disabilities ( PWD ) are exempted from CATE. Their admission will be as per the rules of the University.
No rounding off is allowed in the aggregate marks. For example, 44.9% aggregate can not be rounded off to 45%.

Note : All candidates may need to submit other forms as required by the University of Delhi for admission lo non – CATE Colleges offering BA ( Hons ) English as well as for any Other course. The CATE form is valid only for admission to BA ( Hons ) English in colleges participating in CATE.
CATE 2021 Exam Pattern
CATE 2021 will he held on June, 2021. The duration of the test will be 2 hours.
CATE is designed to test a candidate’s aptitude for BA ( Hons ) English as a course of study, and to that end, it aims at evaluating language, grammar, and writing skills as well as general literary awareness.
The question paper will consist of two parts. Part A will comprise multiple choice questions ( MCQs ) and Part B descriptive – answer type questions ( comprehension and essay / creative piece ). Students will attempt both parts in the same sitting. However, only the scripts of those students who qualify in Part A will have their Part B scripts evaluated.
The final aptitude quotient, known as the CATE score, will be determined by collating the Class XII Examination marks ( Best 4 ) and the CATE marks on a ratio of 30:70. A merit list of candidates will be made on the: basis of such a collation. Separate merit lists will he prepared by the Department of English, University of Delhi for different categories ( General and OBC ) along with one consolidated merit list. The participating colleges will admit candidates to the course on the basis of cut – off points declared by them after the CATE scores are announced
Delhi University administration has made it clear that colleges not participating in CATE :
- MAY NOT conduct a separate test of whatever description to admit students, and have to go strictly by the Class XII marks; and
- MAY NOT use the CATE score as a criterion for allowing / denying admission to any candidate.
