Admission to 5 yr Integrated M.Sc. Programme


National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is being set up by the Department of Atomic Energy of Government of India at Bhuabaneswar in Orissa, beginning with the academic year 2007-08, to impart high quality science education in a vibrant academic ambience, with a faculty of distinguished teachers and scientists. The aim of this special institute is to nurture world class scientists for the country who will take up challenging research and teaching assignments in Universities, R&D laboratories and industry.

NISER will be a residential campus, with suitable accommodation and boarding facilities. Students will have ample and cultural activities. The sprawling permanent campus of NISER will be located at an elegant site near Bhuneswar and is likely to be ready in few years. Until then, it will function in the beautiful campus of the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar.

NISER will be affiliated to Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a Deemed-to-be University within the Department of Atomic Energy. At a later stage, it will award its own degree after getting the status of a Deemed University.

To begin with NISER will have a 5-year integrated M.Sc Programme in basic science (Biology, Chemistry Mathematics, Physics) after 10+2 (or equivalent) schooling. It will have a balanced semester-based course structure with a flexible seamless curriculum that emphasizes interdisciplinary nature of science in the 21st century and promotes exploration, innovation and research. The curriculum for the two semester will be common to all and specialization will begin wit 3rd semester. The students admitted to NISER will receive a scholarship of Rs.3, 000/- p.m. and a suitable a book grant. Those performing exceedingly well in M.Sc. may have a chance to be absorbed in R&D units and autonomous reach institutions of the Department of Atomic Energy.

There will be 40 seats in the first with reservation of 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST categories. The admission will be very selective and students who are highly motivated to pursue higher education and research in science and its applications are encouraged to apply.

The academic session for the batch of students will start in
September 2007

Eligibility for admission to NISER:

Qualification: 60% marks for general category and 55% for SC/ST category in aggregate (or equivalent grade) in Class XII (or equivalent) examination, from any recognized Board in India. Students who have passed the qualifying examination in 2006 or are appearing in 2007 are eligible to apply. Where only Letter grade is given by the Board, a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent percentage marks will be required. In the absence of such a certificate the decision of the NISER Admission Committee will be final.

Age Limit: Candidates born on or after
01 Oct. 1982 are eligible to apply, relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST candidates.


Admission Procedure:

A National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) will be conducted at a number of centres within India on
Sunday 29 July 2007 under supervision of Homi Centre for Science Education (TIFT), Mumbai. The test will consist of five sessions: (1) General (compulsory, (2) Mathematics (3) Physics (4) Chemistry and (5) Biology. Of sections (2-5), which will carry equal weightage of marks, any three will have to be selected. The questions will be of objective type designed to test comprehension and analytical ability of the candidates. Based on the Nest score a limited number of students will be called for interview at Bhubaneswar. Students who are Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna (KVPY) Fellows or those who have qualified in the Indian National Olympiad Examinations (2007) organized by HBCSE (TIFR) in different subjects will be called for interview.
