RRB Eligibility Criteria 2018

Nationality

A candidate must be either :

  1. a citizen of India, or
  2. a subject of Nepal, or
  3. a subject of Bhutan, or
  4. a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  5. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  6. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the examination. However, Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India has to be submitted during Document Verification failing which his/her candidature shall be rejected.

Age Limit

Age Limit is 18 to 28 years. The lower and upper age limit is common for all the notified posts and the same shall be reckoned as on 01st July, 2018.

Age relaxation is applicable 5 years for SC / ST, 3 years for OBC, 10 years for Pwd ( UR ), 13 years for PwD ( OBC ), 15 years for PwD ( SC / ST ) candidates & for others as per rules.

Educational Qualification

Assistant Loco Pilot :

Candidates should possess Matriculation /SSLC plus ITI from recognized institutions of NCVT / SCVT in the trades of Armature and Coil Winder / Electrician / Electronics Mechanic / Fitter / Heat Engine / Instrument Mechanic / Machinist / Mechanic Diesel / Mechanic Motor Vehicle / Millwright Maintenance Mechanic / Mechanic Radio & TV / Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Mechanic / Tractor Mechanic / Turner / Wireman or Matriculation / SSLC plus Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the relevant trade or 3 years Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Automobile Engineering or Combination of various streams of these Engineering disciplines from a recognized Institution in lieu of ITI. Technician :

Matriculation / SSLC plus ITI from recognized institutions of NCVT / SCV in relevant trades or Matriculation  / SSLC plus Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the relevant trade mentioned in notification. For more information refer notification.

RRB Stages of Examination 2018

There shall be two stages examination ( First stage CBT and Second Stage CBT ) common for ALP and Technician. In addition , candidates who have opted for ALP and qualified in Second Stage CBT have to undergo Computer Based Aptitude Test (AT). Marks will be normalized in all the stages of exam.

Negative Marking : There shall be negative marking for incorrect answers in First and Second Stage CBT. 1/3rd of the marks allotted for each question shall be deducted for each wrong answer. There shall be no negative marking for Computer Based Aptitude Test.

RRB ALP & AT Recruitment Process 2018

Only single online application ( common to all the notified posts- ALP & Technicians ) has to be submitted by the candidate through the link provided on the official website of RRBs.

The entire recruitment process shall involve, First stage CBT, Second stage CBT, Computer Based Aptitude Test and Document Verification as applicable.

The date, time and venue for all the activities viz First stage CBT, Second stage CBT, Computer Based AT and DV or any other additional activity as applicable shall be fixed by the RRBs and shall be intimated to the eligible candidates in due course. Request for postponement of any of the above activity or for change of venue, date and shift will not be entertained under any circumstances.
First Stage CBT ( Common for ALP /Technician )
Duration : 60 Min,
No of Questions : 75

Minimum percentage of marks for eligibility in various categories : UR -40%, OBC-30%, SC-30%, ST -25%. These percentage of marks for eligibility may be relaxed by 2% for PWD candidates in case of shortage of PWD candidates against vacancies reserved for them.

The First Stage CBT is of screening nature and the standard of questions for the CBT will be generally in conformity with the educational standards and / or minimum technical qualifications prescribed for the posts. The score of first stage exam shall be used only for short listing of candidates for second stage exam as per their merit. Candidates who are shortlisted for Second Stage CBT availing the reservation benefits of a community shall continue to be considered only against that community for all subsequent stages of recruitment process.

The Questions will be of objective type with multiple choices and are likely to include questions pertaining to :

Mathematics : Number system, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work; Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar & Clock, Pipes & Cistern etc.

General Intelligence and Reasoning : Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and Decision Making, Similarities and Differences, Analytical reasoning, Classification, Directions, Statement – Arguments and Assumptions etc.

General Science : The syllabus under this shall cover Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of 10th standard level.

General awareness on current affairs in Science & Technology, Sports, Culture, Personalities, Economics, Politics and other subjects of importance.

Second Stage CBT

Short listing of Candidates for the Second Stage CBT exam shall be based on the normalized marks obtained by them in the First Stage CBT Exam.

Total number of candidates to be shortlisted for second stage shall be 15 times the community wise total vacancy of ALP and Technician Posts notified against the RRB as per their merit in First Stage CBT. However, Railways reserve the right to increase / decrease this limit in total or for any specific trade(s) as required to ensure availability of adequate candidates for all the notified posts.

Total Duration : 2 hours and 30 Minutes ( for Part Aand Part B together )

The Second Stage CBT shall have two parts viz Part Aand Part B as detailed below.

PART A

Duration : 90 Min,

No of Questions : 100

General Awareness on Current Affairs in Science & Technology, Sports, Culture, Personalities, Economics, Politics and any other subjects of importance.

PART B

Duration: 60 Min,

No of Questions: 75

Qualifying Mark: 35 % ( This is applicable to all candidates and no relaxation is permissible)

This part is qualifying in nature and shall have questions from the trade syllabus prescribed by Director General of Employment & Training ( DGET ). Candidates with ITI / Trade Apprenticeship qualification will be required to appear in the section having questions from the relevant trade. Candidates holding Degree, Diploma and HSC ( 10+2 ) having eligibility for the posts of ALP have to select relevant trade from the list of trades listed against their engineering discipline / HSC ( 10+2 ). The trade syllabus can be obtained from the DGET website. The relevant trades for various engineering discipline / HSC ( 10+2 ) for appearing in the qualifying test is as below:

Computer Based Aptitude Test ( Only for candidates who have opted for ALP )

Qualifying marks : The candidate needs to secure a minimum score of 42 marks in each of the test batteries to qualify. This is applicable to all candidates and no relaxation is permissible.

Candidates equal to 8 times number of ALP vacancies for each of the communities i.e. UR, OBC-NCL, SC and ST ( including ExSM ) shall be short listed for Computer Based AT ( based on their performance in Part Aof the Second Stage CBT subject to their qualifying the Part B of Second Stage CBT ) from among the candidates who have opted for the post of ALP. Such shortlisted candidates should produce the Vision Certificate in the prescribed format as per Annexure – VI in original during Computer Based AT, failing which they will not be permitted to appear in the Computer Based AT.

Candidates will have to qualify in each of the test battery of Computer Based AT for considering them for the post of ALP.The Computer Based Aptitude Test shall have questions and answer options only in English and Hindi. There shall be no negative marking in Computer Based AT.

The ALP merit list will be drawn only from amongst the candidates qualifying in the Aptitude Test, with 70% weightage for the marks obtained in the Part A of Second Stage CBT and 30% weightage for the marks obtained in Computer Based AT.

Candidates are advised to visit websites of RDSO ( www.rdso.indianrailways.gov.in -> Directorates -> Psycho Technical Directorate -> Candidates Corner ) for question patterns and other details of AT.

Document Verification and Empanelling of Candidates

Based on the performance of candidates in Part Aof the Second Stage CBT subject to their qualifying the Part B of Second Stage CBT ( For Technician posts ) and based on the performance of candidates in both Part A of the Second Stage CBT and Computer Based AT subject to their qualifying the Part B of Second Stage CBT ( For ALP ), candidates equal to the number of vacancies will be called for Document Verification. In addition, candidates equal to 50% ( may increase or decrease at the discretion of Railways ) of the number of vacancy for various posts will also be called for DV. These additional candidates will, however, be considered for empanelment only if there is a shortfall in empanelment from the merit list or / and as replacement against the shortfall on account of non-joining of recommended candidates in the working post or / and any other special requirements.

In case of two or more candidates securing same marks, their merit position shall be determined by age criteria i.e., older person shall be given higher seniority.

Appointment of selected candidates is subject to their passing requisite Medical Fitness Test to be conducted by the Railway Administration, final verification of educational and community certificates and verification of antecedents / character of the candidates.

Candidates may please note that RRBs only recommend names of the empanelled candidates and appointment is offered ONLY by the respective Railway Administrations.

How to Apply

Only single ONLINE application ( common to all the notified posts – ALP and Technicians ) has to be submitted by the candidates through the link CEN 01/2018 provided on the official websites of RRBs listed at Para 19.0.

a) Read all the Information and Instructions detailed in the CEN thoroughly before starting the filling up of application by clicking the Link CEN 01/2018 on the official websites of RRBs. It is essential that the candidate understands all information of the notification correctly to prevent any mistakes while filling application.

b) Scanned documents JPEG format to be kept ready before filling the application In order to ensure speedy filling up of application by the candidates, they should keep ready the following documents in digital form before logging in to the application page.

  • Candidate Photograph in color : JPEG image of size 15 to 40KB
  • SC / ST Certificate ( Only for candidates seeking free travel pass ) : JPEG image of size 50 to 100KB
  • Scribe Photograph in color ( Wherever applicable ) : JPEG image of size 15 to 40KB

c) Candidates are further advised to visit website(s) of RRBs frequently to get the latest information on various stages of recruitment process or any changes about this notification.

The onus is on the candidates to prove with valid documents that all the information submitted by them in the ONLINE application is true.
