Bharath Ratna 2011 :

This is the highest civilian award in India. It is given to those who have made exceptional service for the advancement of art, literature, science and public service of the highest order.

The award was established by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on 2nd January, 1954 with other major National Honours, such as the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

It was discontinued in 1977 by Janata Party but in 1980 it was decided to revive the National awards.

But for the year 1993, 1994, 1995 the awards were not announced as the government decided to await the verdict of the court on the constitutionality of these awards which were challenged in two High Courts.
