Independence Day Gallantry Awards 2011 :
The President Pratibha Patil has approved 137 Gallantry Awards to Armed Forces Personnel and members of Paramilitary Forces which includes 14 Shaurya Chakras, 03 Bar to Sena Medal ( Gallantry ), 114 Sena Medal ( Gallantry ), 03 Nao Sena Medal ( Gallantry ) and 03 Vayu Sena Medal ( Gallantry ). There are no winners of Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra, the highest and the second highest peacetime bravery awards, this time around.
Independence Day Sports Awards 2011 :
Rajiv Khel Ratna Award 2011 :
Ace shooter Gagan Narang, who notched up four gold medals at last year’s Commonwealth Games, was conferred the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award on 29th August, 2011. The 28-year-old rifle shooter, who was the first Indian marksman to qualify for next year’s London Olympics with a bronze in the World Championships last year. The award instituted in 1991 – 92, which carries a cash award of ₹ 7.5 Lakh, a scroll of honour and a medal.
Arjuna Award 2011 :
It was awarded for Zaheer Khan ( Cricket ); Rahul Bannerjee ( Archery ); Preeja Sreedharan ( Athletics ); Vijas Gowda ( Athletics ); Gymnastics; Rakesh Kumar, Tejaswini Bai ( Kabaddi ); Rajpal Singh ( Hockey ); Sanjay kumar ( Volley ball ); Sunil Chhetri ( Football ); Ravi Kumar ( Weight lifting ); Ravindra Singh ( Wrestling ); Suronjoy Singh ( Boxing ); Jwala Gutta ( Batminton ); Virdhaval Khade ( Swimming ); Tejaswini Sawant ( Shooting ); Sandhya Rani Devi ( Wushu ); Somdev Devvarman ( Tennis ); Prashant Karmakar ( Disabled ) This award comprises cash prize of ₹ 5 lakh, statue and a scroll of honour. It was instituted in 1961.
Dronacharya Award 2011 :
It was awarded to Ram Phal ( Wrestling ), Devendra Kumar Rathore ( Gymnastics ), I. Venkateswara Rao ( Boxing ), Rajender Singh ( Hockey ) and Kunthal Kumar Roy ( Athletics ). This award comprises of cash award of ₹ 5 lakh, a bronze statue of Dronacharya and a scroll of honour. It was instituted in 1985.
Dhyan Chand Award 2011 :
Shabbir Ali ( Football ), Sushil Kohli ( Swimming ) and Rajkumar ( Wrestling ) were conferred Dhyan Chand Awards for the year 2011 for their contribution to sports by their performance and efforts to promote the sports. This award is given for life time achievement in sports and games, comprising a cash award of ₹ 5 lakhs, plaque and a scroll of honour.
Padma Awards 2011 :
The President of India Smt. Pratibha Patil has approved the conferment of Padma Awards to 128 persons on January 26, 2011.
