Bajaj Launches Discover 100T

Bajaj Auto ( BAL ) on Monday launched its new offering, the Discover 100T ( Tourer ). The 100 – cc bike boasted a patented 4 – valve DTS – I technology.

Addressing the media here, K. Srinivas, President ( Motorcycle Business ), said the bike delivered 10.2 Ps of power, “which is 30 per cent more than other 100 – cc motorcycles, while still giving a fuel – efficiency of 87 kmpl. It delivers the power of a 125 – cc with the economy of a 100 – cc. We call it the ‘Ultimate 100’.”

The new bike will offer a 5 – speed gearbox, Nitrox suspension, standard alloy wheels and a maintenance – free body. It is priced at [rupee] 50,500 ( ex – showroom Delhi ).

The bike is positioned in the A3 segment of the 10 million per annum motorcycle market. The company has a 20 per cent share in the 5.5 lakh per month Indian motorcycle A segment through its Discover and Platina and a 26 per cent share in the total Indian motorcycle market.

Bajaj Auto plans to sell around 45,000 units of the new bike annually. It is being rolled out of the Aurangabad facility and in a few weeks it will also be rolled out from the Pantnagar facility. The company has invested around [rupee] 5 – 6 crore for the bike.

Mr. Bajaj said the company expected to record one of its best performances in the December quarter. “While the first two quarters of 2012 – 13 saw us maintain operating margins at 19 – 19.5 per cent, We have had issues with volumes, commodity prices and export of three – wheelers to markets such as like Sri Lanka and Egypt. But with good contributions from Pulsar 200 NS and the Discover 125 ST and normalisation of three-wheeler sales to Sri Lanka and Egypt, we expect one of the best quarters in our history.”
