Varsity Launches PGDCA for School Teachers

The Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development ( IECD ), Bharathidasan University, has launched a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Applications ( PGDCA ) for school teachers.

The programs being offered on an experimental basis has attracted 43 teachers from Seva Sangam school, Jeyendra Matriculation School, Sankara Matriculation School, and Santhana Vidyalaya School.

The launch of the programs last week also coincided with the start of a computer training programs for 23 senior citizens.

The programs was an off – shoot of the SUITS ( School – University – Industries – Tie – ups Scheme ) under which courses were being offered to school students from class V to IX. The IECD conceived the scheme during 2007 – 08 for imparting hands – on training in IT field to school children through five courses: Computer Basics, Office Automation, Programming Techniques, C Programming, and C ++ programming, IECD Director K.Parthasarathy said.

The number of schools under the programsincreased to 88 during 2011-12 from 46 schools in 2009 – 10 when the course was implemented formally, he said, adding that at present 37,365 students from 109 schools were enrolled under the programs.

The SUITS programs designed for teachers will cover 1,500 candidates in 2012 – 13, Vice – Chancellor K.Meena said, inaugurating the programs. For senior citizens, the course termed ‘Basic Computer Operation and Networking’ equips them to perform all kinds of basic computer-related operation with Internet, she said.

In the wake of the State government sanctioning ₹ 20 lakh to IECD for establishing an Entrepreneurship – Cum – Skill – Development Centre earlier this year, Bharathidasan University has submitted a ₹ 40 lakh proposal to the Department of Higher Education for starting a Centre for Soft Skill Development. The IECD has already been approved as one of the training institutes under Rajiv Gandhi Udyami Mitra Yojana, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India, for offering entrepreneurship training to student and non – student youth.

The university has attuned the several short and long – duration programs offered through IECD for empowering youth with employability skills to the Chief Minister’s Vision 2023. The IECD takes care of women empowerment through specific programs such as tailoring and dress making, fashion technology, herbal cultivation, tourism and travel management, and tourism and hospitality management. The latest programs for women was a course on Apparel Enrichment.

According to the IECD records, women account for 37,606 out of 89,332 beneficiaries of the various programs offered since 2004.
