Biography of West Bengal Governor – Gopalkrishna Gandhi

The youngest grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Gopalkrishna Gandhi is the present governor of the state of West Bengal, India.

Shri Gopal Krishna Gandhi is the ongoing Governor of West Bengal. Gopalkrishna Gandhi  has held copious important administrative posts all the way through his career and was chosen as the Ambassador and High Commissioner of India in several countries.

Other than his own credit he has another identity of being the youngest grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Rajaji C. Rajagopalachari was his maternal grandfather.

On 22 April 1945, Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi was born to Devdas Gandhi and Laxmiben Gandhi. Gopalkrishna Gandhi did complete his Masters in English Literature from St. Stephen’s College under Delhi University.

In 1968, Shri Gandhi joined the Indian Administrative Service and held positions in different capacities in Tamil Nadu. Shri Gandhi married to Smt. Tara Gandhi and the couple has two daughters who are now married and well settled.

From 1985 to 1987, he was Secretary to the Vice President of India and from 1987 to 1992 he has served the post of Joint Secretary to the President of India. In 1992, Shri Gandhi took voluntary retirement from the IAS.

After that he took up the position of Minister (Culture) in the High Commission of India, U.K., and became the Director of The Nehru Centre, London.

In 1996, Gopalkrishna Gandhi was appointed as the High Commissioner for India in South Africa. At the same time he was attributed as the High Commissioner for India in Lesotho.

In 1997,  Gopalkrishna Gandhi took up the position of the Secretary to the President of India. In the year 2000, he was appointed as the High Commissioner for India in Sri Lanka and the Ambassador of India in Norway in 2002.

Gopalkrishna Gandhi was concomitantly endorsed as the Ambassador of India in Iceland. On 14 December 2004, Shri Gandhi took over as the Governor of West Bengal.

He took up the additional charge in 2006, as the Governor of Bihar. Shri Gandhi has authored one novel and one play.
