Athletics

In athletics championship held at Mumbai Marathon, 2012 the overall men’s title was won by Laban Moiben from Kenya. The overall women’s event was won by another African Netsanet Abeyo from Ethiopia. Indian men’s championship was won by Ram Singh Yadav and Indian women’s title was won by Lalita Babar.

Badminton

In the badminton national championship Sourabh Varma defeated B. Sai Praneeth in straight sets and won the men’s title. The women’s singles was won by P.V. Sindhu with a slight margin defeating Neha Pandit.

Cricket

In the reputed national cricket event Ranji Trophy, the Rajasthan team defeated Tamil Nadu to lift the trophy in the finals. In another cricket match, team Mumbai beat Maharashtra by 23 runs in the final to lift under 19 Cooch Behar Trophy. During this season, India Australia test series was also going on and the fourth and final test was won by Australia by 298 runs. This match was played at Adelaide and the name of the trophy was Border Gavaskar trophy.

This was India’s seventh successive test defeat overseas under the captaincy of M S Dhoni and it was India’s worst performance after 1968. Prior to this India was defeated by Australia by an innings in the previous two tests and it was seventh consecutive humiliating test cricket defeat for Indian team overseas. In another test series between Pakistan and England, left arm spinner Abdul Rehman performed his best at six for 25, which lead to a second consecutive victory over England in the second test in the UAE. In a test series that was held between South Africa and Srilanka, Jacques Kallis helped South Africa to win the third and final test at Cape Town; it lead to a series victory of South Africa by 2-1. Pakistan defeated England in the third test too and captured the entire series by 3-0.

Football

In January 2012, “the World Player of the Year Award” was won by footballer Lionel Messi of Argentina. The Barcelona forward Messi received this award for the consecutive third time. In international football, Zambia managed to defeat Ivory Coast in the finals to win its maiden Africa Cup of Nations title.

Table Tennis

In table tennis senior national championship A. Amalraj of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) got his first ever national title in the men’s category. The women’s TT title was won by Poulami Ghatak.

Tennis

In the Australian open tennis championship 2012, Rafael Nadal was defeated by Novak Djokovic, and Djokovic lifted his third Australian open men’s singles trophy. This match was so interesting that it was considered as the longest match in the history of Australian open tennis championship. It stretched up to five hours and 15 minutes. Victoria Azarenka from Belorussia won the women’s singles title; she defeated Russia’s Maria Sharapova in the finals.

Leander Paes and Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek together defeated Bob and Mike Bryan in the men’s doubles final. It was Leander’s maiden doubles Grand Slam title. Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva won the women’s doubles title by defeating their Italian counterparts. In the Hopman cup, Wimbledon champions from Czechoslovakia Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych defeated their French counterparts to win the singles titles.

Archery

In the senior National Archery Championship held at Jamshedpur, Steel Plant Sports Board ( SPSB ) emerged as overall champion and won most of the competitions. Their star performers Deepika Kumari and Pawan Xalxo bagged the gold. The gold medal in the men’s category went to Rajat Chauhan of Rajasthan and V. Jyothi Surekha from Andhra Pradesh in the women’s category. Punjab archers stole the show as the women archers from Punjab clinched victories in recurve round.

T20 Cricket

In the Australia-India T20 cricket series, Australia won the first T20 International. This followed the humiliating 0-4 defeat of India in the test series. But in the second T20 match was won by India. This was the first overseas victory for India in seven months.

Hockey

Good news came for Indian hockey when they qualified for London Olympics by defeating France 8 – 1.

Cricket

The Commonwealth Bank tri – series held in Australia, mong the three nations India, Australia and Sri Lanka, was a very interesting and competitive series. India was not able to make a mark in the series and lacked as a whole unit both with the bat and with the ball throughout the series. However, Sri Lanka managed to keep the series alive with a good come back in the second final of the best – of – three series. Though, they lost the series, but Sri Lanka fought hard in the last decisive final. Australia won the Commonwealth Bank tri – series, second time after 2005 – 2006. The Australian team played as they always do: with full aggression and never say die attitude; and that is why they won the Commonwealth Bank tri-series comprehensively in the end.

Hockey

After a disappointing performance of the Indian hockey team in the Beijing Qualifiers 2008, the Indian hockey team came back strongly, by performing well in the qualifiers for the 2012, London Olympics. They played very well throughout the tournament and they seem to be a very strong side this time around. No one will forget India’s amazing 8 – 1 victory over France to enter the London Olympics. The women’s hockey championship, which was held in Rosario, Argentina, was also an amazing event to watch. The Netherlands was defending their title in the 20th edition of the Women’s hockey championship. The final was held between Argentina and Great Britain. Argentina won the final by 1 – 0.

Tennis

Dubai tennis courts witnessed some action, when Indian tennis pair of Mahesh Bhupati and Rohan Bopanna won the doubles title of Dubai Open held in February and March, 2012. The Indian pair comes at fourth place in world doubles rankings. Their opponents in doubles final were Polish Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

The excellent all round performance of the India side led to their debut title win. In the singles final of Dubai Open, Roger Federar, who was world noumber two at the time defeated third seeded Andy Murray.

Shooting

A new Indian shooting star emerged in the form of Haryana’s Ajay Mittal, who grabbed the gold at the National Shooting Championships for shotgun held in February 2012.

Figure skating ( Four Continents Championship )

The Four Continents Championship that was held in Colorado Springs saw the winners of the two consecutive seasons, the USA’s Meryl Davis and Charlie White losing to Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. The championship was a tough one, but in the end, only the best team with better performance won.

Rugby

The Six Nations Rugby Championship started from 4th February, 2012. It included nations like England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, France and Wales. It was said to be a championship that was very close as all the nations competing were equally good. The tightly contested championship was won by Wales, making it their third grand slam victory.

The Football League Cup turned out to be a great event with all the teams performing pretty well and giving each other the run for their money. The final match took place between Cardiff City and Liverpool at Wembley, London. Cardiff, on one hand appeared for the first time in the finals whereas Liverpool was appearing for the eleventh time. It was an exciting game as it went on until penalty shoot-out, when Liverpool won it over Cardiff City by 3-2.

European Top – 12

The European Top – 12 table tennis tournament for both men’s and women’s started on 4th February and ended on 5th February, 2012, in Lyon, France. The championship was a tough one. In the men’s singles, the final took place between Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany and Kirill Skachkov of Russia. Dimitrij won the final by beating Kirill 4-0. In the women’s singles, the match final was held between Li Jie of nethelands and Wu Jiaduo of Germany. Wu Jiaduo won the final by 4-3.

Cricket

One of the cricket legends of India star batsman Sachin Tendulkar scored his 100th international century for India in March 2012. Thus, he became the first player of the world to score 100 centuries in total in first class cricket, during an ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Sachin, who is 38, is a senior batsman and he had to wait for his 100th century for almost one year after his 99th century, against South Africa in March 2011. It was his 49th ODI cricket; he scored a total of 114 in this match. The right hand batsman also has a record of 51 test centuries to his credit. He also holds the record for being the highest run scorer in both test and one-day cricket. Though his century couldn’t win the match for India, he was congratulated by the Bangladesh players, especially Shakib al Hassan, who was the baller for that over.

International Sports Events in March 2012

Australian Grand Prix

The four day Australian Grand Prix, held in Melbourne was an interesting event. The noise of the running machines kept going for four consecutive days all over Australia. Everyone was eyeing a competition between Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton in the tournament. Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, and Michael Schumacher came first, second and third respectively, whereas Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber came fourth and fifth respectively. Each of these players was a delight to watch and they set the racetrack on fire.

World Cup Skiing

The finals of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup were held in Schladming, Austria. Lindsey Vonn of the USA won the women’s championship while Marcel Hirscher of Austria won the men’s title. Schladming organized this event very well.

NCAA Tournament

The NCAA Men’s Tournament involved 68 schools. The tournament was held to find out the champion at college level. The tournament began on March 13th and was concluded on April 2nd with Kentucky raising the championship trophy of the NCAA tournament. This was Kentucky’s eighth NCAA title. Kentucky defeated Kansas 67-59.

Rally Guanajuato Mexico

In February, Mexico organized the first gravel-racing event of 2012. The total stretch of the race was a mammoth 55 kilometers. Sebastien Loeb was the winner of the 2012 Guanajuato Rally. Leob was getting stiff competition from the likes of Hirvonen and Solberg, but he somehow managed to pull his act properly and race towards the trophy.

It can be said that Saina was not in her best form in this tournament as the world – number – five lost in straight sets against the twelfth seeded, Youn Joo Bae. But the latest Indian revelation Sindhu, who is ranked 27th in the world created a buzz by defeating an 11th seeded player and 8th seeded South Korean Sung Ji Hyun to qualify for the quarter finals. In men’s singles Kashyap also made it to the semifinals after a good comeback in a match against Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana.

In the final results of the Yonex Sunrise India Open, China’s Li Xuerui won the women’s singles title. Shon Wan Ho of South Korea won the men’s singles title. Men’s doubles was won by Thailand’s Bodin Issara and Maneepong Jongjit. The women’s doubles was won by South Korea’s Kim Ha Na and Jung Kyung Eun. Mixed doubles was won by Thailand’s Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir.

Indian Premier League, 2012 or “IPL Season Five”

This cricket extravaganza, which is a fusion of cricket and glamour, started from 8th of April with a pompous opening ceremony. This forty – five day cricket tournament had nine franchisee teams participating this year. This year’s Indian Premier League can be said to be more balanced in terms of the overall team compositions with no particular team being superior or inferior.

The Chennai Super Kings, who were being considered the favorites since the beginning of the tournament seemed out of touch with the game, as a unit. Somehow, they managed to pull their act together and pushed themselves to play the final with the Kolkata Knight Riders, who entered the finals for the first time in the five-year history of Indian Premier League. The match went down until the very last over and Kolkata Knight Riders won this year’s title.

Weightlifting European Championship

The Weightlifting European Championship 2012, turned out to be the best in terms of the competition that was given by the participants from different countries. Russia topped the medal table with a total medal count of 31 followed by Azerbaijan, which got the second spot with seven gold medals, and the second runner up was Turkey with a gold tally of six and an overall medal count of 20.

European Championships in trampoline gymnastics

The European Championships 2012 in trampoline gymnastics was entertainment at its best. The event was held in St. Petersburg, Russia from 9th to 14th April, 2012. A total of around 1000 gymnasts participated in the event as far as provincial entries are concerned and that was a record. At least 120 gymnasts participated for the first time in the under-21 category.

In the girls’ category, four countries contested the finals viz. Ukraine, Germany, Russia, Belarus, and Great Britain. Katherine Driscoll of Great Britain went home with the gold. The boys’ category was contested among Ukraine, France, Russia, Belarus, and Great Britain. Russians topped the chart in this category.

In the end, it was Russia, which stood ahead of all of the teams by getting a total of eight gold medals. Russia was followed by Belarus, which had a gold tally of three followed by Great Britain with a gold tally of two and an overall tally of 9 medals.

Fencing

The Fencing championship was held in Kiev, Ukraine from 13th April to 14th April, 2012. The USA was on top of the medal tally with a total of two medals. The USA was followed by Russia, France, Ukraine, and Hungary with one medal each.

Asian Weightlifting Championships

The Asian weightlifting turned out to be a tough competition. It was held in Pyeongtaek, Republic Of Korea from 24th to 30th April, 2012. China topped the medal tally including “big” ( total result ) and “small” ( snatch and clean & jerk ) by getting 18 gold medals, 12 silver and 6 bronze, making it a total tally of 36 medals. China was then followed by Iran, which had a tally of 8 gold medals, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals making it overall 16 medals. Taiwan came third in the medals’ table with 6 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals with a total of 11 medals.

Judo – European Championship

The Judo European Championship was held in Chelyabinsk, Russia, from April 26 to April 29, 2012. The event saw an array of amazing performances by many participants. Russia topped the medal tally with six gold medals and a total of 11 medals. France followed Russia with a tally of 2 gold medals and an overall seven medals. The third in the medals’ tally was Georgia with 2 gold and a total of 5 medals.

Body Building A Mumbai – based model, fitness trainer and instructor Karuna Swami, who has also launched her Fitness Modeling Program and a rare coaching center for fitness enthusiasts, became the winner of the uncommon but prestigious Miss India Fitness Physique 2012. The event was organized by the Indian Body Building Federation ( IBBF ) at Bidar in Karnataka. Karuna has been trained in the USA by Ms Marika Johansson, a celebrity trainer. The IBBF has selected her to represent India at the Asian Fitness Physique championships, which would take place in China in September 2012.

International Sports Events in May 2012

Sailing Star World Championship

The sailing Star World Championship was held in Hyeres, France from 2nd May to 12th May. Brazil remained on top of the medal tally with one gold, followed by Great Britain and Denmark as they bagged silver and bronze. It was a tight competition, but in the end, Brazil took the slight edge over the two.

Golf – Players Championship

The Players Championship of golf was held in Ponte Vedra Beach, USA. The championship went on from 10th to 13th May. Matt Kuchar of the USA won the title with a score of 275, and took everyone by surprise. Martin Laird and Rickie Fowler gave him very stiff competition.

Swimming European Championships

The swimming championships among the European countries was held in Debrecen, Hungary from were held from 14th to 27th May 2012. Hungary, the host country, topped the medal tally by bagging nine gold medals and an overall tally of 26 medals. Germany followed Hungary and remained in the second position by bagging nine gold medals and an overall 24 medals. Italy stayed in the third position by bagging seven gold medals and an overall tally of 23 medals.

The European Aquatic Championships, 2012 was scheduled to be in Vienna, but the venue was changed because of the Eurozone crisis. The Swimming events took place between 21st and 27th May in Debrecen; Diving events started on 15th and ended by 20th May in Eindhoven and Synchro competition was held from 23th to 27th May also in Eindhoven.

Archery European Championships

The European Archery Championship was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands from 21st to 26th May. The host country Netherlands bagged three gold medals and remained in the first position of the medal tally. Italy stood a good second by bagging two gold medals and an overall tally of seven medals. The third position was taken by France, which bagged two gold medals and an overall tally of five medals. It was a very tough archery championship after a time and a few events had very surprising results as well.

BMX cycling world championship

The BMX World Championship was held from 23rd to 27th May, 2012 in Birmingham, Great Britain. It was a very exciting edition of BMX cycling that one could have ever witnessed. It had everything in it to make it an exciting championship. France stood on the top of the medal tally with an overall five medals, of which, one was gold. July was the month of fabulous and great sporting event – The Summer Olympics London 2012. August was the season of sports for the Ghana republic when many of its sportsmen were busy doing something or the other remarkable and more worthy than anything else. Britain’s spectacular summer of sport ended on September 9, 2012, with the Paralympic Games closing ceremony led by British band Coldplay.

Virat Kohli and M.S. Dhoni put up an unbeated 96-run stand to help India beat New Zealand by 5 wickets in the second Test, played at Bangalore. India sweeped the two-Test series 2-0. Kohli, who had scored 103 in the first innings, was declared man of the match. R. Ashwin, who took 18 wickets in the series, was declared man of the series.

Japan’s 18 – year – old Akihiro Yamaguchi has set a new world record in men’s 200 – metre breaststroke. He clocked 2.07.01, beating the previous world record set by Daniel Gyurta of Hungary at 2012 London Olympics.

Men’s Singles : Finally ending his own drought in majors, Britain’s Andy Murray pulled out a win on a Grand Slam stage, holding off defending champion Novak Djokovic to win the title. The last time a British man won a Grand Slam singles championship was 76 years ago.

Women’s Singles : Serena Williams of USA defeated world’s number one ranked player Victoria Azarenka to win the title. This is her 15th Grand Slam title. Williams, who turns 31 in September, also became the second-oldest US Open women’s champion in the Open era. Margaret Court was one month past 31 when she won in 1973.

Women’s Doubles : Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy grabbed their second Grand Slam title by defeating Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

Men’s Doubles : Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek to win their 12th major title, an Open Era record.

Mixed Doubles : Team of Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and Brazil’s Bruno Soares, who entered the tournament right before sign – up period lapsed.

Babita clinches bronze in world championships

Banita Kumara became only the second Indian woman to win a medal in the World Wrestling Championships when she clinched a bronze in the 51 kg category.

French Open, 2012

Sania Nehwal of India was denied a second straight title by Minatsu Mitani of Japan, when she stunned the World No. 3 Sania in the final of the French Open. This was world No. 26 Mitani’s first Super Series title and also Japan’s first in women’s singles.

Denmark Open

Saina Nehwal breezed past Germany’s juliane Schenk 21-17, 21-8 to clinch the prestigious Denmark Open title, a Super series Premier title.

World Title, 7th

Ace Indian cueist Pankaj Advani proved his class once again as he notched up his seventh World Billiards Championship title after comprehensively beating defending champion and seasoned Englishman Mike Russell in the final.

This is the eighth overall world title for Pankaj and his seventh in billiards.

His first world title in billiards came in 2005 when he created history by becoming the first cueist ever to win the Timed and Points format of the IBSF World Billiards Championship in the same year, a feat he repeated in 2008.

He also won the IBSF World Billiards Championship ( Timed Format ) in 2007 and won World Professional Billiards title 2009.

Twenty20 World Cup

West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 36 runs to win the Twenty20 World Cup. This was their first World Cup win since 1979. Marlon Sameuls was declared the man of the match. Shane Watson of Australia was declared as the player of the series.

Twenty20 Asia Cup ( Women )

The Indian team lifted the inaugural Asian Cricket Council’s Twenty20 Asia Cup after beating Pakistan by 18 runs. The tournament was held in Guangzhou.

Duleep Trophy

East Zone defeated Central Zone by virtue of lead in the first innings to win the rain-hit Duleep Trophy final.

Lance Armstrong has been stripped of seven Tour de France titles and banned for life by the International Cycling Union for being involved in a doping scandal.
