The government has sanctioned 10 borstal schools to accommodate pre-conviction adolescent offenders. This comes in consonance with the Madras High Court order that pre-convicted offenders should not be lodged along with the convicted prisoners.
According to the Director General of Prisons, R. Natraj, the Prison Department had sent a proposal to the government to sanction additional borstal schools to ease congestion in the lone borstal school at Pudukottai where about 400 inmates, including those convicted were lodged.
"We have got orders declaring sub-jails / special sub-jail as borstal schools in Saidapet, Thanjavur, Nanguneri, Melur, Ariyalur, Pollachi, Paramatti, Panruti, Gingee and Gudiyatham. Nearly 150 pre-convicted adolescent offenders are being shifted to these areas," he said.
The provision had been made under section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Bortal School Act, 1925, Mr. Natraj added.
