150 Girl students donated their eyes at the inaugural of the Women Development Cell at Kongu Arts and Science College, on Thursday.
Poet Thamizhachi Thangapandian, chief guest, lauded the gesture.
"Youth can bring about changes in the world. Many great leaders like Cheguvera, Bagath Singh and Vivekananda who changed the perception of the world were young," she said.
She advised the students not to focus on the lives of film stars. "Instead learn about great leaders like Muvalur, Velu Nachiar, Ramamirtham, Thillaiadi Valliammai, Sarojini Naidu, Rukmanidevi Arundel, Alamelu Appadurai and Muthuvadivu."
"Our ancient history and literature reveals that during those time women led the family. But later they were suppressed and were forced to depend on men," she said pointing out that even now the plight of women was pathetic.
"Women are given less wages. Many are forced into prostitution," she said.
