Kozhikode: Minister for Corporation G.Sudhakaran said here on Saturday that Government-level agencies which were given the responsibility to control price rise had failed and increased market intervention by cooperative institutions such as Consumerfed had become necessary.
At the State-level inauguration of the State School Mart of the consumer Federation, the Minister said a proposal for intervention by cooperative institutions in the market every four months, for a period of 35 days each, to check prices of essential commodities had been placed for approval of the Government.
This would be in addition to the market intervention being done by the Consumer Federation during festival session. Proposals for more such intervention would be put forward after the clearance of the Finance Department was obtained, he said.
Approval of the Finance Department was crucial, as commodities had to be sold at subsidized rates.
He said the school market launched at Triveni Supermarket was part of the LDF Government’s efforts to ensure availability of commodities at fair price.
Stationery, note books and umbrellas, etc., will be sold at the 1,500 school markets to be opened across the State. He said about 1,400 tonnes of paper for the Triveni notebooks to be sold through the school markets had been purchased, nine lakh notebooks will be readied for sale.
Mayor M.Bhaskaran inaugurated the first sale. V.Karunan, Consumerfed president spoke.
