Chennai: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Minister for Health Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss to extend the 27 percent reservation to all-India level entrance examinations for the under graduate and post graduate medical course.

The Chief Minister, in his letter to the Prime Minister and the Union Health Minister, said the 27 percent reservation was likely to benefit only a small number of OBC students considering the less number of seats available in the apex institutions.

The seats under the Central quota in a large number of State Government medical colleges were being filled through entrance examinations like AIPMPD and All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination, Karunanidhi observed.

Considering the fact that only these examinations accounted for seats in medical colleges and a large number of OBC students aspiring for professional education should logically be extended to these examinations also, he said.

Welcoming the provision of a separate reservation for SC / ST communities in the AIPGMEE introduced recently, Karunanidhi said this reservation would truly benefit these students only if it was implemented in terms of individual course offered through a roster system, as it is being done in Tamil Nadu and AIIMS.

The Chief Minister also said this principle should also be adopted during the extension of reservation of OBCs also.
