510 Schools face threat of closure

Cuddalore: The Tamil Nadu Government has identified as many as 510 primary schools across the State as uneconomical owing to low student enrolment. These schools are facing the threat of closure, according to S.Abdul Majid, general secretary of the Tamilaga Aarambapalli Aasiriyar Koottani.

Mr. Majid told mediapersons here on Sunday that on the intervention of Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi the closure move was put on hold. But in the absence of any firm official commitment, uncertainly loomed large over the continuous functioning of these schools, he said.

He said no school should be closed; instead, the Government should find ways to make them viable.

By reducing the five-teacher schools into two-teachers once, the previous Government had rendered 9, 000 teacher’s excess, he said.

They were not given salary for the past nine months. Had the Government followed the teacher-student ratio of 1:40 (as found in the government order instead of the prevailing 2:99 ratio) such predicament would not have arisen.

Mr. Majid said because of the mismanagement of the savings accounts of the teachers in Panchayat Union and rupees were going down the drain. The Government ought to take immediate steps to stem the rot, he added.
