The Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET), an institution for marine and shipping education, has been granted deemed university status.
Established at Kanathur in the southern outskirts of Chennai in 1993, the institution offers several diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses in subjects such as nautical science, marine technology and offshore engineering. The Ministry of Human Resource Development had granted the status to AMET after a visit by the University Grants Commission (UGC) Committee. With this, AMET has become the first maritime deemed university in the country managed by a private trust, AMET chairman J. Ramachandran said. An engineering course on naval architecture was recently launched in the institution. AMET director S. Bharadwaj said there are plans to introduce courses on international maritime law, economics of sea transport, marine insurance, marine biotechnology and port management soon.
