Admissions begin for Doctoral Programs at Bharathiar University

Candidates who applied for doing part-time doctoral programme of Bharathiar University and had emerged successful after the counselling were given registration letters here recently.

They were professionals from various fields, including defence-related organisations, Information Technology and lecturers.

The first two candidates S.V. Sudharani and P. Venkata Sarla, both from the Defence Research Development Organisation, were handed over registration letters by the Vice-Chancellor, G. Thiruvasagam.

The candidates were admitted under the programme announced by the university in January, by which post-graduates, mainly professionals, with or without experience from any part of the country or abroad could apply for Ph.D. on a part-time basis.

Guides

This was applicable to those belonging to arts, science, humanities, commerce and management streams. They were permitted to choose their respective guides from any part of the country.The university had planned to develop a guide bank wherein qualified guides in various subjects would be registered.

The list would be posted on the website of the university. Candidates were free to choose their guides depending on convenience and proximity.

Accordingly 100 applications were received from candidates from various parts of the country. Each one of them had come personally to the university for counselling and registration.

The candidates were interviewed by a panel consisting of the Head of Department concerned, a subject expert and Director of the Research and Development Department of the university, according to the Vice-Chancellor.

Review Committee

The candidates would have to appear once a year before a review committee that would assess his or her progress. Those with M.Phil. degree would be given three years to complete their thesis. Others would get four years.

The scheme is aimed at providing an opportunity for professionals who like to earn their Ph.Ds, but were not able to do so on a regular basis for some constraint or the other,” said the Vice-Chancellor.
