Kochi: A new model for industry-institution partnership involving the Cochin International Airport and the Cusat is all set to take of from Kerala.
Termed as first new initiative will mould talents in aircraft maintenance with a view to tapping the tremendous potential in this sector.
The course in aircraft maintenance is being thought of to give students a hand on training in this sophisticated wing suing the proposed maintenance hangar at CIAL, being developed at an investment of Rs.35 crore. At present there is no facility for the students to have the on-the-job training for this course in the country and the proposed course is likely to create hundreds of job opportunities in this sector.
CIAL Managing Director Shreeram Bharat told ‘Express’ that the students from India could be trained for the course which is of great demand in other countries. Now maintenance is expertise are from other countries.
Cusat will provide the academic of the course and on the Job training will be given at the CIAL hangar. As there will be several expert hands at the hangar, the students will get an opportunity to get trained at the international level and maintenance of all types of airlines.
The Aeronautical Engineering Department of Cusat will be conducting the course. The engineers from CIAL will be visiting Cusat to conduct the classes.
According to Shreeram Bharat, the course will commence in the year 2007-08. There will be diploma as well as degree courses.
He said that the diploma course will have the duration of one to one-and-a-half years and the degree course will be of four years with eight semesters and six-month project work. The number of students will be limited to 25-30 in a batch for both the course.
The number of students in each batch will be calculated based on the market demand so that all the students who are completing the course could be absorbed by the airports immediately. To maintain the brand value of the course, the number of seats will not be increased and the screening for admission will be on the status of IIT.

CIAL has planned investments worth Rs.3, 500 crores, with the participation of private sector. When implemented, it is likely to generate 17,000 job opportunities.
The airport company is confident of attracting huge maintenance order from South Asian countries as the airport is close to many an international air route. Given the boom in tourism and charted flight service, CIAL hopes to convert itself into an engineering base for all major airlines.
