Andhra Pradesh To get Rs.1,000 – Crore Biotech Institute

Hyderabad 13: Andhra Pradesh, which has a large concentration of biotechnology units, will get a Rs.1000-crore Institute of Translational Research during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period.

The State Cabinet, which met here on Friday, approved allotment of 75 acre of land to the institute at Karakapatla in Medak district, about 40 kilometres from here.

Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and CSIR will jointly set up the institute which will take up research activity in. fields like stem-cells, genetics and biotechnology.

When the proposal came i to the notice of the State Government, Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy took up the matter with the Central Government. As CCMB, which has its research facility in Hyderabad, is one of the promoters, the State Government wanted the institute to be set up near Hyderabad.

After the project report was ready, the Union Ministry of Biotechnology held discussions with the State Government.

Besides the land, the State Government will also provide all the necessary infrastructure facility for the institute.

The Central Government will spend Rs.300 crore on the institute during the next five years. The remaining funds, will be released later, sources added.
