Anna University, Coimbatore plans Novel Outreach Programs for Working Personnel

Anna University, Coimbatore, will offer as part of its outreach programmes, undergraduate, post-graduate and management courses to employees of government, public sector and private organisations. This will enable them to pursue higher studies while in service.

Some of the courses proposed are B.E. and M.E. in Mining Engineering, M.E. in Energy Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Signals and Systems and Environmental Sciences.

A Centre for Outreach Education Programme is proposed to be created at the university for the purpose.

According to Vice-Chancellor R. Radhakrishnan, the programmes will be offered to the staff at their own work premises on a revenue- sharing basis, based on the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding that would be signed. Mr. Radhakrishnan told The Hindu:

“There are a lot of people who like to get qualified in some specialisation. The programmes will be decided based on the requirements of the staff. A curriculum will be designed and the classes will be handled by the university staff.”

The classes would be scheduled for evenings or weekends. The Vice-Chancellor said: “Many organisations have shown interest. Draft MoUs with such organisations are under process. Some government and private players have designed their own subjects and are willing to tie up with the university for conducting examinations and providing certification.

Such subjects will be placed before the Academic Council and the Syndicate for approval.” He said the university had decided on the proposal considering the requirements of industry.

“Such-tailor made courses, relevant to industry, will help the already experienced staff gain higher qualifications,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
