Anna University to be Trifurcated

Chennai: The globally renowned 28-year old premier Anna University in Chennai will soon become an affiliating body for engineering colleges in six districts with the Government creating two new offshoots in Trichy and Coimbatore. The offshoots will be called as Anna University, Coimbatore and Anna University, Trichy.

Tabling a Bill to launch two new technical universities in the Assembly in Thursday, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi said that colleges located in Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Karur, The Nilgris, Theni, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal and Salem will be governed by the Coimbatore Anna University.

Similarly, the Trichy Anna University will have jurisdiction over the engineering colleges in Trichy, Cuddalore, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, Perambalur and Tiruvarur.

The engineering colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram will continue to be affiliated to Chennai Anna University.

Stating that managing the affairs of more than 240 engineering colleges across the State from Chennai had become a near impossibility, the Bill said ensure better and effective monitoring of the affiliated colleges.

Ponmudi said Special Officers would be appointed to the two new universities soon and Vice Chancellors in due course.
