Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) set up 21 More Apparel Training Centres

This is in addition to the existing 29; Ministry aims to train 25,000 students in a year

Chennai: The Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) under the Union Ministry of Textiles is to set up 21 more centres throughout the country by December this year in addition to the existing 29.

These centres train students in various aspects of garment manufacturing, said G.D.Gaur, Registrar of ATDC, Gurgaon, here on Tuesday.

Participating in a function organised by the Chennai centre, the Director said the Ministry’s aim was to train at least 25,000 students in a year. The placement record of the centre was more than 95 per cent.

The same situation would continue as there was a huge demand for skilled workers in apparel industry. The industry would require about 5.2 million skilled workers by the end of the 11th Five Year Plan. The industry growth, now 11 per cent, was expected to increase to 16 per cent in the coming years.

As part of social responsibility, the centre, in collaboration with the National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation (NBCFDC) and the National Scheduled Caste Finance Development Corporation (NSFDC), was training backward classes and Scheduled Caste students sponsored by various State Governments.

So far 5,000 students, including a good number of women, had been trained in various vocational courses and all of them were suitably employed in garment industry.

Various initiatives were on the anvil for the development of women, SCs, STs and OBCs living below the poverty line, he said.

Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan distributed certificates to Backward Class and Scheduled Caste students who underwent training at the centre.

She also handed over course admission certificates to the next batch of students selected for the training. She said a special fee concession was offered to students sponsored by State Governments.

A.A.Naqvi, Managing Director of the NBCDFC, said the corporation had disbursed assistance to the tune of Rs 82 crore to 1.85 lakh families in Tamil Nadu. The corporation had linkage with technical institutes to provide training to “under privileged” students.
