Chennai: The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly opposed the proposal of the Tamil Nadu Government to introduce sex education in schools.
At a seminar here on Thursday, the speakers from the party highlighted the evils of including sex education in school curriculum.
Presiding over the seminar, party president L Ganesan said, ‘‘Sex education is totally against Indian culture and no Hindu, Christian or Muslim will speak in favour of it. No civilized teacher will come forward to teach the subject,’’ Ganesan said and added that the Maharashtra and the Madhya Pradesh Governments had already rejected the proposal.
The BJP would select 100 platform speakers and would be given a day’s training to speak with evidence on the issues relating to Ramar Setu and sex education. They would hold meetings at various places in the state. The party would forward a memorandum to the government. If the proposal was not dropped, then it would intensify its agitation from July onwards, Ganesan warned.
Party general secretary Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said that there was no need for sex education to prevent AIDS. The same could be eradicated by creating awareness and intensifying campaign programmes. It would spoil young minds and result in child pregnancies, she warned.
‘‘Sex education is suitable only for Western countries, where mothers pack the pills in tiffin boxes for their school-going daughters. India, a tropical country, does not need this,’’ said Girija Seshadri, correspondent of the Jayagopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya.
Others, who spoke on the evils of sex education, included party vice-president Raja, Saraswathi Research Centre director Kalyanaraman, Vivekananda Vidyalaya Education Trust secretary Govindarajan, columnist Sthanumoorthy, Dr K M Rao, Sujatha Rao and Lalitha Subash.
