Chennai: Kalasalingam University will offer integrated B.Tech programme for the hearing impaired from the next academic year.

Addressing journalists here in Saturday, C.Thangaraj, Vice Chancellor of the university, said this was first time an exclusive technological courses was being offered for the hearing impaired

In the six-year integrated B.Tech programme, the hearing impaired students, who have passed class X, can apply. Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical and Civil Engineering are the courses, which will be offered under the degree.

In the first two years, students will learn preparatory subjects of class XII level in Tamil. In the next two years, there will be diploma-level subjects and in the last phase, students can do their specialization.

Initially, 120 students will be admitted to this B Tech programme.

“To encourage under-privileged students, there will be scholarships. We are going to give 100 percent concession for 30 students will get 50 percent fee concession,” said the Vice Chancellor.

The maximum age for the admission is 20 years and the students will be chosen through an entrance examination. Lecturers trained in special education, counselors and advisors for this course will soon be recruited.

Arulmighu Kalasalingam College of Engineering has obtained university status recently. As for the other developments, the university will patronize grading system. “We will do away with the traditional examination system. Students will have wider choice of subjects,” explained Thangaraj.

There are also plans to introduce lateral entry into B Tech course. The university is also planning to have twinning programmes with other universities in India and abroad.

Chancellor of Kalasalingam University T Kalasalingam said their aim is to provide higher education for the students in the rural areas.
