A day after, final semester Bangalore University (BU) BSc students raised hue and cry over the low marks awarded to them in zoology paper, the university has ordered a high-level confidential report into the evaluation process.

Launching itself into damage control mode, the university also decided to allow the students to have a look at their answer scripts on request. A feasibility report has also been sought from experts whether the Academic Council’s decision to allow candidates who have good marks in all papers but in one or two papers to apply for revaluation could be implemented with immediate effect or not.

Presently, university rules do not allow students who have secured less than 15 marks in a paper to apply for revaluation.

On Thursday, Deccan Herald had highlighted the plight of final semester BSc students, who alleged that there had been a major goof-up in the evaluation of zoology paper-8. Several meritorious students had been awarded very low marks in the paper.

Bangalore University Registrar (evaluation) Radhakrishna Rao Madankar said as many as 1,926 students had appeared for zoology paper -8 of which 1,675 students had secured pass marks. Of the 338 students who were declared ‘fail’, 68 have secured single digit marks.

The chairman of the examination board will go through the answer scripts at random and submit a report whether there has been erratic evaluation or not.

“We will ensure that students are not put to hardship. We will allow them to have a look at their answer scripts. Experts are being consulted”, he said.
