Bangalore University reserves Seats for Transgenders
A historic decision to reserve one seat each in its 52 postgraduate departments for transgenders and slapping a penalty of Rs. 5 lakh on 11 B.Ed. colleges for admission and examination malpractices were among the key resolutions approved by Bangalore University’s Academic Council here on Monday.
Vice – Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev said the provision to reserve seats for transgenders under the supernumerary quota would be in addition to the existing reservation. “It will lapse if nobody comes forward,” he said.
Bangalore University will be the first varsity in the State to reserve seats for transgenders from this academic year.
The council also decided to write to the State Government to make similar provisions for the admission of transgenders to undergraduate courses as the university has no jurisdiction to reserve seats under this category in affiliated colleges.
According to information available with the university, Dr. Prabhu Dev said there are many transgenders who are either pursuing or have completed undergraduate courses as either male or female candidates.
The 11 B.Ed. colleges, which were found guilty of malpractices in admission and examination in an inquiry conducted by the university, also face the threat of derecognition from the next academic year.
The council has decided to recommend to the State Government to derecognise these colleges.
However, the list of 11 colleges recommended for derecognition were not placed before the council.
Dr. Prabhu Dev informed the council that it was not possible to recommend to the Government to derecognise these colleges during the present academic year because it would affect the students already admitted.
Application Form Submission 16 Dec 2020 to 16 Jan 2021.
