Bharathiar University Scraps Internal Assessment for UG courses

Coimbatore: Bharathiar University (BU) has scrapped the internal assessment system for under graduate (UG) programmes in its affiliated colleges, starting this academic year.

However, the system is being retained for post graduate (PG) programmes. The decision, which has taken in the recently held academic council and syndicate meeting at the varsity, would come into force at all the non-autonomous colleges under the BU.

Speaking to reporters, Prof G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said that the decision was taken on a par with other universities and also to avoid the disparities arising out of the system.

The internal assessment system was not properly utilized by colleges as there were many complaints regarding differences in students’ internal assessment marks, he said.

According to Thiruvasagam, there were instances of a student who despite having scored well in the internal assessment, failed the external examination. He added that students were even awarded marks for attendance, which was strange.

As the system was retained for PG programmes, the varsity formed special squad to monitor and ensure its credibility, in both autonomous and non-autonomous colleges. No marks would be given for attendance, he added.

The 25 marks to be awarded as internal assessment would be based on test marks (15), seminar presentation (5) and assignments (5).

Compulsory Diploma

In another significant development the varsity made it compulsory for students of both UG and PG programmes to complete a diploma course, along with the degree, to qualify for the degree, to qualify for the degree. A failure in the diploma course would disqualify the student for the degree as well, it noted.

The diploma would be handled by regular teachers, borrowing some time from the main subjects, Thiruvasagam said. “These diplomas will provide the necessary skills, expected by recruiting companies he added.

For UG, it would start during the third semester, whereas for PG, it would begin from the first semester itself.

SLET /NET Extension

The varsity extended the time limit for college lecturers to clear either the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) or the National Eligibility Test (NET), till 2009.

Earlier, the varsity had made it mandatory for lecturers to have an SLET /NET qualification. The initial duration of two years, that was given to candidates to clear these examinations, was extended further by two more years.
