Bharathiar University Seeks more funds under the UGC

The Bharathiar University has demanded more funds under the University Grants Commission's XI Plan, to meet the growing demands of higher education.

The varsity has placed a demand for Rs.60 crore before a UGC Expert Visiting Committee here on Friday for its overall development, which is much higher than the amount it got sanctioned under the X Plan period, which was Rs.3.85 crore.

The varsity is not satisfied with the 'meagre' funds received under the previous Plan the seven member committee, led by former professor of JNU, R P Kaushik is on a three-day visit to the varsity to review how BU has utilised the funds allocated under the X plan and assess its requirements for the oncoming XI Plan.

"This proposal is to improve the infrastructure, buy equipment and sanction of faculty positions as well," said BU Vice-Chancellor Prof G Thiruvasagam during a press conference here on Friday.

According to the VC, a lot of improvements have taken place in the BU between the UGC's X and XI plan period, which includes introduction of 15 departments along with many innovative and specialised courses.

Understanding the UGC's preference for universities that help the poor and disadvantaged sector, the BU said that their two constituent colleges, in Valparai and Gudaliir, cater mostly to the under-privileged students who come for higher education.

The assessment by the expert committee started on Thursday and will continue till Saturday on a positive note, the committee's convener R.P Kaushik said they were satisfied with the performance of the BU.

More over, on Friday the university also inaugurated facilities like video conferencing, a mechanism to maintain attendance of staff by making thumb impressions and local networking.

The VC also said that the colleges affiliated under the BU must have video-conferencing facilities, which will take only s.1.25 lakh to set up, otherwise the varsity would not sanction new courses.

"Through video conferencing, the expertise of the best teachers can be utilised for the benefit of the students when they visit the:city" the VC said.
