Bharathiar University fails to prepare students for Civil Services

“While concentrating on offering students employable education, we have failed to prepare students for the civil services,” Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam said here on Wednesday. “This is a visible gap in our education system,” he added.

He was inaugurating a conference on ‘Preparing Students to Succeed in the IAS Examinations’, organised jointly by the Civil Services Coaching Centre of the university and the SNR Sons College at the college premises.

The Government and universities should find out alternative areas of study that will be of service to the society and design syllabus and conduct examinations for it, he said.

Citing statistics, the Vice-Chancellor lamented that the number of civil services aspirants from the State was a pathetic figure

“In 2007, out of the 9,300 finalists who made it to the final examinations, only 612 were from the State. This sad state of affairs is due to poor awareness people have about the work of a civil servant,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said. “Preparation for becoming a civil servant does not require wealth or superior education. It only requires investment in self-confidence and hard work,” he added. He urged those who have successfully cleared the civil services examinations to take some time to visit colleges and motivate students to become civil servants. He also said the M.A. Civil Services course introduced in the university had only eight students. “Bharathiar University will launch an exclusive website to aid those preparing for the civil services examinations. This will be launched by the end of September. Students will be able to get all kinds of information related to the examinations,” he said. “They will also be able to get in touch with those with similar interests to enable them to come together and organise group studies,” the Vice-Chancellor added.
