Bharathiar University to revamp research degree programmes

Coimbatore: Bharathiar University has embarked upon various measures to improve the quality of M. Phil and Ph. D degree programmes from the next academic year.

Since State-level Entrance Test and National Entrance Test had been done away with, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all the universities to strengthen their M. Phil and Ph. D programmes, G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University told reporters here recently.

“In order to do this, we have decided to instruct the colleges that offer m. Phil programmes to upgrade their infrastructure such as library and computer lab. The admission to the course will be centralized. The university will select eligible candidates based on their external marks, give them ranks and allot them to colleges. The required fees will also be fixed by the university. A new paper on teaching methodology will be introduced that will include two-month teaching practice. The candidates will be required to publish a research paper in one of the standard subject journals identified by the university”. Prof. Thiruvasagam said.

The final decision as regards the fee amount would be taken after the meeting with the college secretaries on Monday.

The Association of Indian Universities held a conference for vice-chancellors of all Indian universities, attended by the chiefs of the apex bodies like medicine, technology, education, etc.

In addition to the 200 vice-chancellors, the UGC Chairman was also present.

“It was decided that the entire syllabus for M. Phil would be changed all over India and there would be common papers from the academic year 2007-2008”.

As regards the Ph. D programme, he said: “We are planning to organize a one day workshop for all research guides and supervisors.

Senior professors who are retired and also scientists will orient them as to how to guide a research project. A doctoral committee will be formed consisting of the Head of the Department of the discipline in which the candidate is doing his/her research, one expert from outside of the university and the research guide. This committee will monitor and review every six months.”

These stringent measures he hoped would bring about the required quality enhancement that was envisaged by the participants at the conference.

It would also increase the standard of those doing their M. Phil – 98 from the university and 687 from affiliated colleges – and Ph. D – 94 from the university and 273 from affiliated colleges.

Prof. Thiruvasagam said, “We will allow the colleges to work in shift system from the next academic year. The timings will be from 8 a.m. to 1.15 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Certain courses of colleges that were done away with because of nomenclature, will be allowed by the university to use the same or different nomenclature chosen by the colleges. This will be a step towards liberalization of education”.
