Coimbatore: 19-year-old P Jayanthi of Trichy and S.Kavitha of Paramakudi were among the blind students from poor background who attended the election her on Tuesday for the Marge Schulze Scholarship to help them pursue degree courses.
Jayanthi who passed out from Pudur School for Blind in Trichy with 74 percent marks in plus-two, opted to join B.A. English at the Avinashalingam University.

Kavitha’s aim is to become a school teacher. So she opted for B.A. Tamil Literature.She did her schooling at Integrated School in Madurai.
The students were put through tests in Braille writing, reading skills and mobility.
A total of 20 students in Tamil Nadu are eligible for the scholarship. Of the 18 students who attended the interview, all were selected, but the parents of two students informed that they can afford for their wards’ education and opted out of the scholarship paving way for two poor students to utilize the opportunity. A maximum of Rs.20,000 per annum was extended to the selected students as scholarship under the project. Seven of them will be doing their graduation courses in Avinashalingam University, others at colleges in their respective areas like Queen Mary’s Stella Mary’s and Government Arts College, Trichy, Said. The Interview has come to Tamil Nadu this year for the convenience of the students here. The Department of Special Education in Avinashalingam University conducted the interview in coordination with You under Disabled (UDIS) and Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM).
The main vision of the scholarship is to make blind women as leaders in society. The German-based Marge Schulze Foundation is involved in assisting blind women in India and Africa to pursue higher education and achieve success in life.
