New Delhi: Lamenting the shortage of good teachers, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development M.A.A Fatmi said on Tuesday that India could become a developed country in all aspects by 2020 only if a good education system and good teachers were available.

Giving away the "Central Board of Secondary Education Teacher Awards 2006" to 13 educationists from across the country, Mr. Fatmi stated: "The shortage of good teachers is really unfortunate. In the next five years, the government will focus more and spend money on secondary education. At the same time, we need good teachers to make good use of this money."

Commending CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly for taking new initiatives, the Minister said there ought to be more CBSE-affiliated schools in rural areas.

"The CBSE expansion has an important role to play as we move towards universalisation of secondary education," Mr. Fatima said.

Earlier, Mr. Ganguly said teachers had a significant role to play in society as "there was no replacement for a teacher in a classroom" despite technological advancements.

The CBSE Teacher Awards were instituted in 2000 by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Each award comprises a merit certificate, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs. 25,000.

Iyengar of Prakash Higher Secondary School, Ahmedabad; Raj Bahadur of St. Angela Sophia Senior Secondary' School, Jaipur; Shiv Ram Modgil of DAV Public School, Ranchi; Meena Kak of Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, Kolkata; Ranu Baruah of SBOA Public School, Guwahati; M.H.
